Cameron holds off ENMU for 72-66 win

LAWTON – The Aggies held off a pesky Eastern New Mexico squad looking to upend CU's title hopes to win 72-66 in Lawton on Thursday evening.

With the win the Aggies will at least have a one game lead through the weekend in the Lone Star Conference standings.  A win next week at Angelo State will give the Aggies a shot to at least play for a share for the LSC title next Saturday in the Aggie Gym for homecoming.   Cameron has not won a LSC title and hasn't won a conference title of any sort since 1974.

"We struggled a little bit, they (ENMU) jumped it up a bit so we couldn't run our normal ball screen and get into a good flow," said head coach Nate Gamet.  "I think we battled, we got out of character a little bit…when it came down to crunch time I have to give credit to the guys they stepped it up and got the job done."

Deondre Ray pulled off his third double-double of the season with a game high 19 points and 11 rebounds.  James Cross also had a double-double, his second of the year with 11 points and ten boards.  Cameron Lee put up 13 and Jamaal Brantley added ten points.

The Aggies didn't have the best shooting night at the floor going 23-for-58 (39.7%) but they pulled down 51 rebounds matching a season high last set earlier this season against Southwestern Adventist.   Cameron was sent to the floor 35 times where they had 21 points.

Eastern New Mexico shot 25-for-67 on their side of the floor and they pulled down 41 boards.

ENMU took an early 10-7 lead but the Aggies would hold them scoreless for nearly nine minutes to score 12 unanswered points and built up an 11 point advantage (21-10) by the seven minute mark.  However, Cameron fell flat heading into the halftime horn going 2-for-11 from the field to open the door for the Greyhounds to race back to get within one, 31-30 at the intermission.  The Aggies would shoot 35.5% from the field with Ray leading the team with nine points.

The Greyhounds continued to stay on the Aggies' heels for the majority of the second half and the contest remained at least a two possession game until Ray sank a three-pointer with 1:27 left to make it a 67-60 ballgame.   ENMU played the free-throw game with CU making one-of-two shots on three straight occasions. With the Aggies missing shots at the line, the Greyhounds nailed a trey with 17 seconds left to make it a 70-66 game.   At the line once again, CU made only one shot but ENMU missed a three-point attempt to get within two to clinch the win.

Chaunce Hill led the Greyhound with 12 points, two others had 11 each.

With the win Cameron will go to 15-8 overall and 8-3 in the LSC; head coach Nate Gamet also will see his three year career at Cameron move to .500 with 39 wins.   The loss for ENUM sends them to 6-16 overall and 2-8 in league play.

Cameron will have the weekend off and will return to the floor on Wednesday, Feb. 17 at Angelo State.
