SAN ANGELO, Texas– The charity stripe proved to be the difference in the Aggies' 82-75 loss at Angelo State on Wednesday night.
While Cameron would make six of their nine three-pointers in the second half, it was no match for the Rams' 17-for-19 effort at the line as ASU would pick up their fourth straight win.
At 8-4 in the league, Angelo State, Midwestern State, West Texas A&M, and Cameron are in a four-way tie for first in the Lone Star Conference standings, with Tarleton State one game back.
Deondre Ray scored a career high 31 points, marking the first time an Aggie has had a 30 point game since Craig Foster's 32 point effort at Texas A&M-Commerce on Feb. 5, 2014. Ray also tied his career high in three-pointers, making four of Cameron's nine treys.
Cameron Lee also finished in double figures with 15 points, and
Jamaal Brantley added 14.
From the field, the Aggies shot 28-for-68 (41.2%) and the Rams had one fewer but edged the Aggies at the line, making 22-of-27 compared to CU's 10 points at the charity stripe.
Angelo State jumped to a 9-0 lead to start the game as CU had trouble finding the basket, going scoreless for nearly four minutes. Cameron battled back with Ray making a three-pointer to put the Ags within two (14-12) at the 13:39 marker. However, Angelo State would retain the lead for the entire first half, making a last second jumper to stay up 26-32 at the break.
The Rams would lead by as much as 15 in the second half, and the Aggies would cut the deficit to within five with 12 seconds remaining as
Cameron Lee hit back-to-back three-pointers. However, Angelo State added two points at the line to nail down an 82-75 victory.
Tre Bennett led the Rams with 19 points, and Stedman Allen was one back of him with 18 points.
Next, Cameron will take on Texas A&M-Kingsville on Saturday in the Aggie Gym for homecoming.
