CU women fall at home to Greyhounds

LAWTON – The Cameron women didn't have many answers in the final minutes surrendering a double-digit lead to fall 72-69 at home to Eastern New Mexico on Thursday evening.

Cameron finished the game shooting 2-for-14 from the field and went scoreless for the final 3:40 in the game to cough up an 11 point four quarter lead.

Brandi Leal knocked down four three-pointers, all of which were in the first half and sits at 166 in her two seasons at Cameron tied for the program mark with Brittany Cooksey (2001-06); Leal would finish the night with 16 points.

Dayla Threatt led CU with 20 points, and she had five rebounds; DJ Vallier had 12 points along with eight boards and five blocks.

The Aggies shot 24-64 (37.5%) and only made seven buckets in the second half; ENMU didn't shoot well either going 23-68 (33.8%) from the field.    The Greyhounds out-rebounded CU by ten with 52 and sank 21 of their 26 shots at the line; Cameron would go 12 of 20 at the stripe.

Cameron stormed out early to a double-digit lead thanks to an 11-0 run on the Greyhounds and hot shooting kept CU well ahead through the first period by holding onto a 27-17 lead.    The Aggies shot 10-for-17 through the first 10 minutes with Leal leading the team with 11 points; ENMU struggled from the field making only four shots.

Despite CU's strong play in the first period they would open the second going scoreless for five minutes allowing ENMU to score ten unanswered points to tie the game at 27 each.  A three-pointer from Natalie Halbleib at the 5:08 mark opened the lid off the bucket storming on a 14-2 run on the Greyhounds and taking a 41-31 lead by the 2:33 mark.   By the end of the half, CU would head for the locker room with a 47-34 lead and shooting 58.6% on the floor; from the arc the Aggies were 9-for-14.

Cameron didn't get the second half start that they wanted sinking only four shots in the third quarter.  Luckily for the Aggies, the Greyhounds struggled as well and also made only four shots and outscored CU 15-13 in the period.  Into the fourth period, the Aggies held a 64-53 lead on the Greyhounds, but the scoring would come to a halt and an ENMU jumper with ten seconds left was their first lead (70-69) since the opening of the game.

The Aggies had a late shot with a shooting foul with six seconds to go and a one point game.  However they would miss both and forced CU to foul and ENMU iced the game with a pair of free throws.

Sarah Stinnett led ENMU with 26 points.

The loss is the third in a row for the Aggies and will send them to 6-6 in the LSC and 12-9 overall; ENMU will move to 4-8 in league play and 9-13 overall.

Cameron will have the weekend off and will return to the floor on Wednesday, Feb. 17 at Angelo State.
