SAN ANGELO, Texas --
Brandi Leal is the new career three-point leader for the CU women's basketball program but they would fall 71-63 on Wednesday night. Â The loss for the Aggies is their fourth in a row and drops them to 6-7 in Lone Star Conference play and 12-10 overall.Â
Leal had 11 points, three of which were from beyond-the-arc to move to 169 in her two year career at Cameron surpassing Brittany Cooksey (2001-06) who had 166 in four years.Â
Dayla Threatt led the Aggies with a double-double scoring 17 points and 12 rebounds. Â
Natalie Halbleib had nine points and eight boards,
DJ Vallier knocked down two blocks and also had eight rebounds. Â
Cameron relied heavily on their three-point shooting taking 40 attempts at the arc but they would only hit eight on Wednesday night. Â From the field CU went 24-for-75 and only made nine shots in the final two periods. Â
Angelo State didn't shoot the ball well either going 23-for-65, matching CU's nine made shots in the final 20 minutes, and connected on eight treys against the Aggies.Â
Rebounds were even at 50 each and CU had 17 more second chance points than ASU but the deciding factor was 13-2 run to end the third period.
Â
Cameron stayed with the Rambelles through the first half and went to the locker room tied at 36 each. Out of the intermission, CU jumped ahead 41-39 with a five point run from Leal and a trey by Threatt at the 8:37 marker. Â However, Cameron hit a wall and the Rambelles finished the third period with an 13-2 run to take a 52-43 lead leaving the Ags only seven points in the third quarter. Â
In the fourth quarter the Rambelles extended their lead to 13 before an 1-for-12 run at the bucket opened the door for the Aggies late. Â A jumper by Vallier with 1:12 pulled CU with in five (64-59) and they would foul ASU in the next run down the court. Â After Angelo State spilt their free throws, a costly foul put
Charron Montgomery at the line where she put the Aggies four back (65-61) with 55 seconds left. Â However this would be the closest the Aggies would get without making a shot to the final horn. Â
Brea Mitchell led ASU with 19 points as the Rambelles move up to 17-6 overall and 10-3 in the LSC.
Â
The Aggies will return to the floor on Saturday at 4 p.m. for homecoming against Texas A&M-Kingsville.
