Aggies hold off Javelinas for 64-58 Homecoming victory

LAWTON– The game came down to the line as Cameron would snap a four game skid with a 64-58 win over Texas A&M-Kingsville on homecoming. Cameron held a one possession lead heading into the final minute, and a late 4-for-4 free throw effort sealed the Aggies' victory.

Charron Montgomery led the Aggies with 19 points, a 7-for-9 effort at the charity stripe and three steals. Dayla Threatt had 13 points and a team high six rebounds.

While both sides made an even five three-pointers, Cameron shot 44% (22-for-50) from the field, compared to the Javelinas' 34.6% (18-for-52) on the floor.

Texas A&M Kingsville would cut a seven point CU advantage to lead by three themselves on a 12-2 run in the first quarter, with the Javelinas scoring ten points off of Cameron miscues. The Aggies would get their advantage back in the second period as Threatt made back-to-back treys and Savanna James tacked on two to put the Aggies up by their largest lead of eight, 31-23.

TAMUK made three consecutive free throws to trail the Aggies 31-25 at the half, following a 7-for-11 effort at the line. Cameron shot 12-for-23 (52.2%) in the first half, while holding the Javelinas to 8-for-26 (30.8%.)

With nearly four minutes remaining in the third quarter, the Aggies trailed by one as the Javelinas were hot on the Aggies' heels with TAMUK's Kaylin Roher making her third three-pointer of the period, starting a seven point chain to put her team up 50-42.

At the 3:55 marker, an Aggie free throw tied the game at 54-54 and Brandi Gomez made her second trey of the quarter to make it 57-54. A pair of Cameron free throws extended their lead to five, but the Javelinas would later go 2-for-4 at the line to make it a 60-58 game at the 1:14 marker.

However, Montgomery would have a 4-for-4 effort at the charity stripe in the final minute as time expired for the 64-58 Aggie win.

The Javelinas edged the Aggies by two in rebounds, grabbing 34 boards. TAMUK would also score 15 points off of 17 CU turnovers, while the Ags cashed in 14 turnovers for nine points.

Kyra Bauer led the Javelinas with 17 points and a game high eight rebounds. Kaylin Roher was two back of her at 15 points.

Cameron will travel to Denton on Wednesday for a mid-week matchup with Texas Woman's before closing out the regular season against Midwestern State on Saturday in the Aggie Gym, carried live in its entirety on the ESPN3 network for the NCAA Division II Basketball Game of the Week.
