Softball splits opening day at West Texas Invite

CANYON, Texas – Cameron opened the West Texas Invitational with a mixed bag winning their opener 4-1 to Adams State behind a strong 12 strikeout performance from Emily Wasinger but they would get no-hit by Fort Lewis 8-0 in five innings on Friday afternoon.

The no-hitter is the first for the Aggies since March 10, 2009 at Southeastern Oklahoma and CU narrowly escaped having the Skyhawks (2-4) toss a perfect game if it wasn't for a Sonora Zukerman walk in the top of the fifth inning.   All the scoring for FLC came after two scoreless innings where they loaded the bases with no-outs; the Skyhawks would bang out five hits and have four touch home plate in the inning.   In the fourth, a bases clearing one out double capped off a three run inning to push FLC ahead 7-0.

Fort Lewis would close the contest out in the fifth with a two out double to left center to run-rule the Aggies.

Zukerman (2-1) would be charged for the loss going three innings with four runs given up (two earned), Alyssa Osterdock recorded the final five outs with four runs charged to her.

Rewinding back to the opener against Adams State (2-5), the Aggies picked up early runs with a Chelsea DeLong single to right field for a RBI in the first and Carly Allerheiligen hit her fourth double of the season in the second inning to score two.

The early run support would be all Wasinger (2-1) needed using 115 pitches to punch out 12 batters in a three-hit ballgame' she would only give up a solo homer in the fifth.

Cameron's fourth run in the contest came from freshman Jordan Kisselburg in the fifth inning who walked with the bases loaded.

The spilt will place the Aggies at 6-4 overall and they will return to the field on Saturday to face St. Mary's and Colorado State-Pueblo.
