Live VideoGame NotesFirst Tip:Â Cameron was unable to secure the perimeter as the Aggies would fall 77-69 to Texas A&M-Kingsville in Saturday evening's homecoming game. The Javelinas would make nine three-pointers in the win to pick up their first league victory on the road this season.
Jamaal Brantley scored 27 points, tying his career high, and added nine rebounds for the Ags.
Cameron Lee was also in double figures with 13 points. Cameron shot 21-for-51 from the field, and 23-for-29 at the line with four made three-pointers. Meanwhile, Texas A&M-Kingsville went 28-for-60 on the floor, 12-for-16 at the charity stripe.
Brantley ranks third in the Lone Star Conference averaging 17.2 points a game during the league play. He has scored 10-or-more points in each of his last 11 games. Ray is fourth in the LSC scoring 16.5 points a contest during league play. Redshirt-Freshman
JV Long is first in the LSC at the charity stripe, shooting 86%.
NCAA Division II Game of the Week:Â Saturday's regular season finale is the NCAA Division II Game of the Week and will be broadcasted live on the ESPN3 network. Â This is the first time in Lone Star Conference history that a basketball contest has been selected by the NCAA as its national game of the week and the first time an ESPN event has come to Cameron University.
Due to an expected sellout, the doors and ticket booth to the Aggie Gym will open at noon. Â Arriving early will be the only away to guarantee a seat to Saturday's contest.
About Midwestern State:Â At 9-4 in the Lone Star Conference, the No. 14 Mustangs are in sole possession of first place in the league, holding a full game lead over a four way tie for second place. Midwestern State took over the top spot in the NCAA Division II South Central Region rankings released earlier this week improving to a 20-5 overall record with wins over Texas A&M-Kingsville and then-No. 16-ranked Angelo State. Against ASU, Trevor Fuller set LSC and school records with 11 blocked shots, which is the third most in NCAA Division II this season. He is averaging 3.92 blocked shots per game. Khapri Alston also came up big last week, averaging 18 points and nine rebounds a game. In the nation, MSU is second in blocked shots per game (6.6), second in total blocks (165.0), fifth in field goal percentage defense (38.6), fifth in rebound margin (+8.4), sixth in scoring margin (+16.0) and eighth in defensive rebounds (29.92).
LSC Championship Dogfight:Â Midwestern State has already clinched at least a share of the LSC regular season title regardless of their result with the Aggies. Â With a four way tie for second place with Angelo State, Tarleton State, and West Texas A&M a win for the Aggies will clinch them a share of the LSC regular season title for the first time in program history and the Aggies will face Eastern New Mexico in the opening round of the LSC Tournament as the top seed. Â However, a loss to MSU, the Aggies could fall as far as the number-5 seed. Â
Last Time vs. Midwestern State:Â The Aggies held off a late 9-0 Mustang run to stun No. 6 Midwestern State 80-75 on the road in their first meeting this season. Â The victory is also the Aggies' first win in Wichita Falls since 1990.
Deondre Ray led Cameron with a career high 23 points as he went 8-for-10 from the field with two treys in addition to seven boards.
Jamaal Brantley (15 pts),
JV Long (12 pts), and
Cameron Lee (11 pts) were among the other Aggies in double figures. Brantley also pulled down a team high eight boards.
Overall, Cameron shot 55% (27-for-53) from the field, while the Mustangs had 39% (27-for-70) on the floor. MSU drained 12 three-pointers to the Aggies five, and CU went 71% (17-for-24) at the line, and Midwestern State shot 64% (9-for-14) from the charity stripe.
Midwestern State edged the Aggies in total rebounds by two with 39, but Cameron had 33 defensive boards to the Mustang's 26. MSU would also have seven blocks to the Aggie's three. Additionally, Cameron cashed in nine MSU turnovers for 18 points.
CU vs. Midwestern State:Â Â With a win early this season at Midwestern State the Aggies have done something that hasn't been done since 1990 which was win at MSU and take back-to-back games. Â The Aggies trail the overall series 25-45 and only have taken three in a row against the Mustangs twice, during the 1968-69, 1969-70 seasons, and the 1989-90, 1990-91 seasons. Â Inside the Aggie Gym, Cameron has dropped five of their last six against the Mustangs but holds a 14-20 record in Lawton. Â In six previous meets with Midwestern State, head coach
Nate Gamet is 2-4.
