COMMERCE, Texas -- The Aggies could never find a rhythm in a poor shooting night for Cameron and Texas A&M-Commerce but it would be the Lions picking up a 53-47 home win in Commerce on Wednesday night.
Cameron shot 18-for-60 (30%) which was their second worst shooting night of the season; the Lions didn't fair much better by going 20-for-71 (28.2%). The 47 points scored by the Aggies is a season low and it is the first time they have been held below 50 points since Dec. 1, 2012 where they would only put up 35 at Incarnate Word.
Texas A&M-Commerce snapped the Aggies four game winning streak and they are the last two losses for CU. Much like their meeting in the Aggie Gym earlier this season, the Lions took the lead and never relinquished it by leading for nearly 37 minutes.
Charron Montgomery led the Aggies with 13 points,
Brandi Leal was a point back with four made three-pointers. DJ Vallier had a pair of blocks with eight boards and
Savanna James also had eight rebounds.
The Aggies out-rebounded the Lions 51-to-46 but 23 turnovers and going 5-for-13 at the free throw line proved to be their undoing. Texas A&M-Commerce capitalized with 15 points off of Aggie turnovers while CU could only counter with a pair.
Cameron best run came at the end of the third period and at the start of the fourth were they would pick up back-to-back three pointers from Leal in the final 70 seconds of the third quarter to trail 40-35. A free throw to close the third quarter and a Montgomery layup put the Aggies back by a pair but the Lions would pick up a big three pointer at the 8:59 marker to halt the CU run.
The Aggies would put together one last comeback attempt in the closing minutes with Dayla Threatt and Leal hitting back-to-back three pointers to put them back by one (47-46). However, Cameron couldn't land another bucket in the final three minutes to get past A&M-Commerce on the road.
Gabby Scott led the Lions who will move to 11-10 overall and 4-5 in the Lone Star Conference. The Aggies will fall to 12-7 and 6-4 in league play. With Angelo State upsetting West Texas A&M in Canyon 112-111 in triple overtime, Cameron missed a chance to be one game back of first place in the LSC standings with seven games remaining.
Instead, the Aggies will sit in fourth place with a one game lead over Tarleton State who will visit Lawton on Saturday at 2 p.m.
