CANYON, Texas – A big opening inning in the final game of Cameron's series at #1 West Texas A&M was enough to avoid a sweep with CU winning 9-6; the loss to the Aggies is WT's second in 38 games this season.
The win by the Aggies snapped a Lady Buff 22 game streak in Canyon dating back to Cameron's win over WT in the NCAA Regional Tournament last season.  Additionally, CU's victory is the fourth overall in Canyon with head coach
Rodney DeLong picking half of those.
The nine runs scored by the Aggies was the most allowed by WT in their last 43 games and was done after Cameron dropped the opening game, 8-3, to the Lady Buffs.
Cameron stayed in the opener for most of the contest until a four run fifth inning proved to be the difference.  The Lady Buffs took a two run lead in the first scoring off of a double and an illegal pitch.  After a scoreless inning, Cameron tied the game off of a
Paige Daino ground ball and a WT error.  However, in the bottom half of the inning
the Lady Buffs picked up a go-ahead run off an illegal pitch and added one more in the fourth off a RBI triple.
The Aggies got their third run in the fifth off of a
Annie Combs solo shot but WT pounded out five hits in the bottom half of the inning to take a 8-3 lead.  Cameron went down in order in the sixth but managed to load the bases with one out in the seventh.  However, WT would switch pitchers and the next two CU batters would strike out
to end the game.
Cameron had eight hits but left ten batters on base on the loss;Â
Sonora Zukerman had two hits and a walk. Â
Emily Wasinger (13-4) tossed five innings with all eight runs being earned;
Alyssa Osterdock tossed a scoreless sixth for the Aggies in relief.
In the final game of the series, Combs lifted CU with her third homer of the weekend for three runs,
Chelsea DeLong added a two run shot, and Daino added a RBI single to go up 6-0 over WT.  The Lady Buffs picked up a run in the home half of the first before Zukerman hit her 40th career homer in the fourth to keep the CU advantage at six.
Cameron's six run lead proved to be needed with WT scoring three runs in the bottom half of the fourth.  However, CU escaped the inning with West Texas A&M having the bases loaded with one out. Zukerman who started the final game would get the final two batters to pop up and ground out to end the rally.
In the fifth, the Aggies continued to get needed insurance runs off a
Breezy McComas RBI single and a Zukerman RBI double to push their lead back up to 9-4.  The bottom half of the inning, WT once again gave CU a scare loading the bases with one out and Zukerman fended off the threat for the second time getting WT popup and hit into a fielder's choice to end the inning.
WT continued to push Cameron and in the sixth they would get a two run shot to get within three.  The Aggies would put Wasinger in for the save situation to record the final five outs and she would wrap up the game to send CU home with the win.
Cameron had 13 hits with Zukerman having three,
Abbey Warren and DeLong both had two;  Zukerman (6-3) also earned the the win going 5 1/3 innings.
With the victory over WT, the Aggies are 25-12 overall and 10-6 in league play, they will be off until April 1-2 where they will host Texas Woman's for a four game series.
