WICHITA FALLS, Texas – For the first time the No. 15 Cameron women's tennis team can call themselves Lone Star Conference Tournament Champions after beating No.17 Midwestern State 5-2 on Saturday in Wichita Falls.

The victory completed a historic LSC year for the Aggies where they won the regular season title for the first time.

"Today was a battle, and I am very proud of these girls," said head coach James Helvey. "Anytime you walk out on the court you have to be ready, and we were ready. This is something they wanted bad, and they worked very hard to get here. The team talked about it since the first day of school, and they went out and got it."

In doubles, CU fell in the three-slot with Mathilde Thibaudat and Samantha Wood winning 8-2 but evened the match with No. 15 Alina Gorina and Zhenia Shviadok taking their twelfth match in a row 8-2.  The final point came down to Paula Gutierrez and Angie Torres who were tied at six each, but they would drop the final two games to give the Mustangs a 2-1 lead into singles.

Following the intermission, Gorina tied the match with a 6-2, 6-0 win in the two-slot to move to 18-5 in singles this season.  Torres would be the next CU player to come off the court to put them ahead of the Mustangs 3-2 with a 6-4, 6-1 win in the four-slot.  Thibaudat pushed CU one away from the overall match win with a six-slot 7-5, 6-1 victory, and Shviadok clinched championship winning the first set in the three-slot 6-2 and taking the second set in a tiebreaker 7-6.

Cameron will see their record move to 21-3 with the Mustangs falling to 18-9 overall; Helvey will enter the post season sitting on win No. 797.

The Aggies will wait until Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. for the NCAA Selection Show, which will announce the post season bracket on NCAA.com.
