Gillean’s career night lifts Aggies over Southern Arkansas

DURANT– Jenna Gillean powered 21 kills in the Aggies' 3-1 win over Southern Arkansas (25-27, 25-17, 25-22, 25-9) on Friday night, which set a career high for the sophomore.

Gillean also contributed 11 digs in the match earning a double-double alongside sophomore Shelby Mench who recorded 23 assists and 12 digs on the night. Freshman Gabrielle
Lerma matched with 12 digs but was just shy of a double-double with nine kills.

Additionally, Cameron's victory also marks head coach Qi Wang's 250th career coaching win.

Overall, Cameron (1-1) finished with 49 kills, 10 aces and six team blocks to beat Southern Arkansas (1-1) who hit .054 with 38 kills.

Late mistakes proved costly for the Aggies in set one as Cameron led 23-18, but a SAU kill followed by three consecutive CU errors allowed the Muleriders to inch within one. CU and SAU knotted at 25-25, but the Muleriders would take advantage of another Aggie error and finished with a set-winning ace, 25-27.

In set two, however, the tables turned as the Muleriders ended with four straight attack errors to aide CU to a 25-17 edge. Set three remained tight as CU stayed on set point while SAU took advantage of three attack errors, but freshman Joseline Caraveo delivered the set winning kill.

Cameron flourished in the fourth and final set, jumping ahead 6-0 to start, then later spurred a 14 point streak to lead 23-5. The Aggies capitalized with a .323 hitting mark to best the Muleriders for the set and match.

The Aggies will conclude play in Durant on Saturday with a double header against New Mexico Highlands and East Central.
