Cameron falls late to Eastern New Mexico

PORTALES, NM – Savanna James recorded her fifth game with over 20 points this season, as she scored 25 in the Aggie women's 84-76 loss to Eastern New Mexico early Thursday afternoon.

The Greyhounds opened up the game on an 8-0 run, going 3-4 in the first four minutes. The Aggies responded by going on a 6-0 run, but ENMU made two straight buckets to make it 18-13 after the first quarter. Cameron went on a tear in the second quarter, outscoring Eastern 27-10 while shooting over 50 percent from the field and three point range. CU capped off the half on an 8-0 run and led 40-28 going into the break with James leading the way with 13 points.

ENMU started their comeback in the third quarter, shooting 53 percent from the field and going 2-3 from three and 9-9 from the charity stripe to win the third frame 29-19 as the CU lead was cut to just two heading into the final 10 minutes of play. The two teams went back and forth in the fourth, trading buckets as the score was tied up at 69 points apiece with just under five minutes to play. Thanks to an 11-0 run the Greyhounds retook the lead and went up 78-69 with just under three minutes left in the game. From there, the Aggies could not get back into their rhythm and Eastern closed out the game 84-76.

The Aggies shot just 38.5 percent from the field and 31.3 percent from three point range, while going 21-28 from the free throw line. They won the battle at the boards (39-35) and the turnover battle (16-19), but failed to convert those turnovers into points as they scored just eight points off turnovers. James ended the game with 25 points, her fifth game with 20 or more points this season; she has now gone 11 straight games with 10 or more points. James went 8-13 from the field, 2-3 from the perimeter, and 7-8 from the free throw line. Jamie Bonnarens chipped in 14 points and a game high seven rebounds in the loss.

Eastern New Mexico shot over 45 percent from the field and 42 percent from three point range. Former Aggie, Brandi Gomez had a career high 20 points, while four other Greyhounds had double figure scoring games.

The loss moves CU to 4-9 overall and 2-5 in LSC play, while ENMU remains perfect in conference play with a 7-0 league mark while moving to 11-3 overall.

Cameron will be back in action on Saturday, Jan. 14 as they travel even further west to take on Western New Mexico starting at 3 p.m. central time.
