Big second half lifts Aggies past Western New Mexico

SILVER CITY, N.M.– Jamie Bonnarens scored a career high 21 points to lead the Aggies past Western New Mexico 83-60 on Saturday.

The freshman from Cache, Okla. bested her career mark by one point that she last set on Dec. 3 at Tarleton State. 13 of Bonnarens points came in the first 20 minutes where the Aggies went toe-to-toe with the Mustangs before outscoring them 49-28 in the second half for the victory.

Bonnarens complimented her performance with six rebounds, four steals, four assists and two blocks.

Savanna James was one point behind her with 20, but she also posted 12 rebounds to earn her fifth double-double of the season.

Natalie Halbleib rounded out the Aggies in double digits with 19 points. Additionally, Brittany Hill set a career high with 10 assists.

Cameron would lead by as much as ten in the first quarter, but a 7-2 run by WNMU cut that lead in half before the first frame buzzer. The Mustangs kept at it to nab their first advantage (28-27) of the game with just under two minutes remaining of the half.

Both sides traded the lead several times with a minute to go with WNMU never leading by more than one, but the Aggies took advantage of a couple of steals to go on a 5-2 run to head into the locker room with the 34-32 edge.

In the first half, Cameron shot 38 percent from the field while WNMU shot 41 percent. Both sides made just one shot apiece from downtown. The Aggies went 3-for-6 from the charity stripe, and the Mustangs shot 3-for-4 from the line.

Cameron controlled the pace to open the second half by building their lead to 19 and improving their shooting on the floor to 56 percent. Into the final frame, the Aggies would extend their lead to their largest of 27 and kept WNMU from repeating any runs they made in the first half and held them to no more than 30 percent from the field and out deep.

The Aggies won 83-60 for their first true road victory of the season and extended the Mustangs' skid to ten games.

Cameron moves to 5-9 overall and 3-5 in the Lone Star Conference, while WNMU goes to 4-11 and remains winless in the league at 0-8

The Aggies will have a quick turnaround as they visit rival Midwestern State on Tuesday, Jan. 17 at 5:30 p.m.
