Late run seals Cameron’s victory over Midwestern State

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Three minutes was all it took for the Cameron women's basketball team to compile a late run that would create momentum for the Aggies to seal a 94-76 victory over Midwestern State on Tuesday evening.

After battling out of 70-70 tie with over six minutes remaining of the game, the Aggies stepped on the gas pedal spurring a 13 point run and would make ten buckets in a row down to the last 30 seconds to stifle the Mustangs' second half comeback attempt.

Both Charron Montgomery and Jamie Bonnarens achieved career highs with Montgomery tallying 22 points complimented by five assists and Bonnarens notching 22 points to lead the Aggies in scoring.

Bonnarens also recorded two blocks, four steals and four rebounds for a well-rounded performance.

Rounding out the Aggies in double digits was Savanna James (12 pts), Ava Battese (11 pts) and Natalie Halbleib (10 pts).

Aside from the game's first four minutes where MSU opened with a two possession lead, the Aggies controlled a steady advantage throughout the first half to lead 49-41 at halftime.

They did so by edging the Mustangs on the floor in a 20-for-40 outing compared their 16-for-26. Both sides managed an even three treys and six free throws over the first 20 minutes.

However, MSU would arrange a third quarter comeback attempt using a 9-0 run to grab their first lead since the 5:47 maker in the first frame. Still, Cameron kept within two possessions.

After knotting the score twice in the fourth quarter, the Aggies gained their lead back with the Mustangs on their tail with two good free throws one point behind with five minutes to go.

Cameron would then make their move going on a 13 point run over three minutes to stretch their advantage while MSU went just 1-for-8 from the field in the final minutes to fall by 18 points to the Aggies.

Overall, Cameron shot 52 percent from the field, while the Mustangs shot 47 percent on the floor. Both teams made an even five three-pointers. The Ags shot 88 percent from the free throw line, and MSU 68 percent.

Additionally, Cameron scored 31 points off 21 MSU turnovers, 12 of which were forced by Aggies steals; however, the Mustangs outrebounded CU by just one, 35-34.

Cameron advances to 6-9 overall and 4-5 in Lone Star Conference action. MSU goes to 4-11 overall and 1-8 in the league.
