DENTON, Texas – The Cameron women's basketball team fell to Texas Woman's 77-63 on Saturday, losing the fourth quarter battle 22-7. Â
After trading buckets through the first minute of the first quarter, TWU went on an 8-0 run to helped them build a 21-15 lead after the first 10 minutes of play. Much like the first quarter, the two teams traded buckets to start off the second frame, but CU put together a 6-0 run to take the lead back at the 3:42 mark. Each team then took turns scoring, as the score was tied six times in the last four minutes of the first half. The Pioneers were able to get a layup in the last seconds of the second quarter to make it 38-38 going into the half.
Cameron shot 46.9 percent in the first half, while going 3-9 from three and 5-8 from the free throw line. Texas Woman's shot the ball 28 times in the first 20 minutes, making 42.9 percent of their shots, while going 1-3 from the perimeter and 13-18 from the charity stripe. In the third quarter, CU took the lead and stretched it to seven points at the four minute mark, but the Pioneers charged back and cut the lead to just one point heading into the final quarter. TWU kept up their momentum and took back the lead with 5:20 left in the game. From there, Texas Woman's dominated and put together a 17-2 run in the last five minutes to secure the 77-63.
The Aggies shot just 25.6 percent in the second half, on their way to a 35.2 percent shooting percentage for the game. They went just 5-24 from three point range, and hit only 57.1 percent of the foul shots. CU turned the ball over 21 times and had just 10 assists.
Brittany Hill led CU with 14 points, five rebounds, and four steals, while James chipped in 13 points and nine rebounds.
Texas Woman's shot 39 percent from the field, 30 percent from the perimeter, and got to the 26 more times than the Aggies as they went 26-40 from the charity stripe. Over half of their points came off the bench, as G. Mitchell finished with 18 points and 12 rebounds, while Kara Mitchell scored 19 points as well.
The loss puts CU's record at 6-10 overall and 4-6 in Lone Star Conference play, while TWU is now 12-6 and 5-5 in league play.
Cameron will be back at home for their next two games as they host Tarleton State on Thursday, Jan. 26 and then Texas A&M-Commerce on Saturday, Jan. 28.Â
