Aggies use deep ball to move past Tarleton State

LAWTON, Okla. – The Cameron women's basketball team drained 11 three-pointers in route to an 81-72 victory over Tarleton State on Thursday evening.

Nine of the Aggies deep balls were made in the second half where CU worked to close the gap after being down by as much as 11 points in the opening frame.

Four Aggies recorded double digits with Jamie Bonnarens leading the Aggies with 18 points after a hot shooting night where she missed just two attempts from the field, while making both buckets from down town coupled with a 4-for-4 effort at the line.

Savanna James was behind her with 16 points, Natalie Halbleib 13 points and Brittany Hill 12 points.

Halbleib hit the most treys for the Aggies going 4-for-5 from the arc, and totaled the most rebounds with eight. With a team high five assists was Hill.

The Aggies experienced a cold start to the first half, falling back by as much as 11 points to the TexAnns and remaining down 32-28 at the half buzzer.

However, James would set the Aggies' agenda to open the second half by making a three-pointer in the first seven seconds.

Right after a TexAnn turnover delivered the ball to Bonnarens who would get the layup and draw the foul to bring the Aggies their first lead (34-32) since CU's 1-0 lead to start the game.

After a couple of lead changes and never dropping back more than two possessions, the Aggies let loose from downtown making seven in a row in the second half and nine total.

Another aspect of CU's success was keeping TSU quiet from the free throw line, just 4-for-6, while shooting 14-for-17 from the line themselves.

From the field, Cameron shot 48 percent and TSU 46 percent. TSU narrowly edged the Aggies at the glass, claiming 35 boards to CU's 34.

???????Tarleton State was led by Bailey Wipff with 17 points.

Cameron advances to 7-10 overall and 5-6 in the Lone Star Conference. TSU goes to 8-9 and 7-4 in the  league.
