CU women fend off A&M-Commerce, win 96-94

LAWTON, Okla. – The Aggies' defense came up big to prevent a late Texas A&M-Commerce comeback attempt to win 96-94 on Saturday afternoon.

Cameron held a one point advantage heading into the final 20 seconds but fended off three Lion possessions and tacked on a free throw with one second remaining for the victory.

It was all part of the Aggies' second half spark that saw them take their largest lead of eight points after being down 47-41 at the half struggling to keep the Lions out of the paint where 36 of their points came from.

CU's win is their second in a row and halts a four game TAMUC streak. The Aggies are now 8-10 overall and 6-6 in the Lone Star Conference while the Lions move to 14-6 and 8-4 in the league.

Natalie Halbleib highlighted the Aggies with a career high performance where she tallied 26 points and six steals marking her 11th game in double digits this year. She also grabbed 11 rebounds for her fifth double-double of the season.

Also in double digits was Jamie Bonnarens tying her career high 22 points, Savanna James 15 points and Charron Montgomery 11 points.

Additionally, Brittany Hill turned in a team high seven assists.

In the first half, the Lions relied on the inside making all 18 of their field goals in paint. The Aggies contested from the perimeter in the second quarter making four deep balls while seeing TAMUC miss all nine of their attempts.

The Lions took a 10-4 run in the final three minutes of the first frame to hold a 47-41 lead at halftime.

The third quarter saw the Aggies pick up defense under the basket keeping the Lions to 30 percent from the field, but TAMUC also woke up from beyond the arc to drain three treys of their own and shoot 8-for-10 at the line.

However, Cameron worked to close the gap, coming within one possession of the Lions four times before taking their first lead of the second half, 63-62, at the 1:45 marker in the third quarter.

After back and forth action, the Aggies broke open for their largest lead of eight around the six minute mark of the fourth quarter following a couple of fast breaks flourished with a three-pointer by Bonnarens.

With a little over a minute remaining, the Lions would tie the game back at 92 all and again at 94 all. Bonnarens broke the tie with 18 seconds left making one of two at the line, and the Aggies would fend off the Lions three possessions forcing them to miss two shots and created a turnover to keep their advantage.

Cameron ended the game shooting 42 percent from the field, 33 from beyond the arc and 72 from the charity stripe.

Cameron's defense accounted for 13 steals, and they cashed in 27 points off of 23 turnovers. Despite outrebounding the Aggies by ten (56-46), the Aggies led in second chance points 24-18.

The Aggies will be on the road for their next four contests stopping first at Angelo State on Feb. 2.
