KINGSVILLE, Texas—The Cameron University volleyball team fell to 2-8 in Lone Star Conference play as they fell in straight sets to Texas A&M-Kingsville on the road on Friday night.
Set one was back and forth, with each team holding a lead early on. After falling behind by three points, 15-12, the Aggies scored on a kill by
Paige Dixon and a service ace from
Brittnee Altic to cut it to just one. The Javelinas then went on a five point rally to give them a six point lead at 20-14. CU battled back, but the damage had already been done as TAMUK took the set 25-21.
The second set was similar to the first at the start, with an
Ashleigh McFatridge kill evening the set up at 10 points apiece. Again, the home team used a big rally to take a six point lead. Cameron hung in the game with big kills from Altic, McFatridge, and Dixon and forced the Javelinas to take a timeout as CU had cut the lead to just three after having been down 24-18. Unfortunately, TAMUK responded out of the timeout with a kill of their own to win the set 25-21 and take a 2-0 lead.
The two teams traded blows back and forth throughout the third set, tying up the score four times before a McFatridge kill tied the set at 10. They continued to go back and forth until a three point rally for Texas A&M-Kingsville helped them take and extend their lead to 16-13. CU got one back before another two Javelina points forced CU to take a timeout down by four. A few points later, the Aggies still trailed by four, 21-17, before using their own third set run to even the match back up, with help from a pair of kills by Dixon. The two teams went back to trading blows, but a pair of kills from Kingsville's Madison Brabham was the difference as they finished off the set 25-23 and the match 3-0.
Dixon led CU with 14 kills and attack percentage of .270, while
Brittany Lawson chipped in nine kills and 10 digs.
Brook Conley had her 10th double-double of the season with 24 assists and 13 digs, while Altic had 17 digs as Cameron's libero. Additionally, McFatridge led the Aggies with six blocks, including two solo and four block assists, to go along with five kills.
Kingsville was led by Brabham, who had 13 kills, while Casey Klobedans had 31 assists and Jasmine Jacinto had a team high 17 digs.
The Aggies are now 5-13 overall this season and 2-8 in league play, as the Javelinas are now 12-8 on the season and 5-4 in LSC matches.
Cameron will conclude their four game road stretch with a match against Texas Woman's on Tuesday, Oct. 17 starting at 7 p.m. before heading home for a three match span.
