LAWTON – The Cameron volleyball team's blocking game flourished as the Aggies recorded an impressive 20 blocks en route to a five-set (25-15, 24-26, 21-25, 25-21, 15-9) victory over UT Permian Basin on Friday evening.
Â
The Aggie's 20 blocks are the most posted by a team in a single match in the Lone Star Conference this season, beating Texas A&M Commerce's season high 18 blocks against Tarleton State in September.
Â
Three Aggies achieved a double-double in the match as
Ashleigh McFatridge notched her first double-double in the Black and Gold uniform behind a team-high 10 blocks and 14 kills. Nabbing her second double-double of the year was
Brittany Lawson who put down 10 kills and 16 digs, while setter
Brook Conley recorded her 12th double-double of the season with 46 assists and 12 digs.
Â
Paige Dixon and
Brandy Carr also knocked down double-digit kills with 12 and 10 respectively. Carr narrowly missed reaching a double-double as she contributed nine blocks.
Brittnee Altic matched Lawson for a team-best 16 digs.
Â
For the Falcons, three reached double figure kills as Charlesia Jones posted a team-high 12 kills while Travana Matthews and Caitlyn Guajardo followed up with 11 kills each.
Â
The CU/UTPB match marked the Aggie's first five-set match since their opening weekend in September and their only five-set victory of three total this year. CU moves to 6-14 overall and 3-9 in the LSC, while UTPB falls to 4-18 overall and 1-12 in the league also extending their losing streak to 13 matches.
Â
The Aggies jumped to a great start in set one, defeating UTPB 25-15 behind a match-high .423 attack percentage never letting up their lead. However, in set two, the Falcons would find their first lead of the match but never gaining ahead by more than two points.
Â
CU got their lead back and had a 21-20 advantage before UTPB started a four point chain with a block followed by three straight kills to arrive at set point. Cameron fought back to knot the set at 24-all, but the Falcons knocked down back-to-back kills for the 26-24 extra point set win.
Â
In set three, the Falcons rolled with strong offense with 16 kills on just three errors with the Aggies notching 14 kills but with seven errors that proved to be their undoing. McFatridge delivered two straight kills to put the Aggies within one point at 22-21, but UTPB responded with three of their own to win 25-21.
Â
The fourth set saw the Falcon's offense falter as they hit just .079 with 11 attack errors and 14 kills. Cameron broke for a seven point lead mid-way through the game, but UTPB was hot on their tails to inch back to a one point spread, 21-20. Two CU blocks and a kill brought the Aggies set-point interrupted by just one Falcon kill before CU nabbed the final point, 25-21.
Â
The Black and Gold cruised to the fifth set win and match victory after the Falcons hit in the negative attacking percentage with CU triumphing 15-9.
Â
Cameron returns to the Aggie Gym at 2 pm on Saturday to face West Texas A&M.
