WICHITA, Kan. –
Johann Tate takes over in the second half as he scores 16 points in the final 20 minutes to lead CU to an 80-69 win over Oklahoma Christian on Saturday at the Heartland/Lone Star Conference Challenge. Â
After trading buckets early in the first half, Cameron took the lead with a
Bryce Elie three pointer and never gave it back. They used a 14-0 run to take a 21-10 lead at the 12:05 mark. Oklahoma Christian battled back, but the Aggies held them off as they went into halftime up 37-30.
Elie had a strong first half, as he scored nine points and grabbed four rebounds, while
Delano Jones had eight points and
JV Long had seven and four assists for CU. Cameron shot 43 percent from the field through the first 20 minutes, but went 5-11 from three and 8-9 from the free throw line.
The Eagles started the second half by cutting the CU lead to just three points, and after the Aggies responded, OC cut away at the lead again, reducing it to just one at the 15:12 mark. From that moment, Cameron got hot and finished the half shooting 57 percent from the field and hitting 6-12 from three. Tate powered the Aggies with eight straight points from the 4:07 mark to the 1:36 mark. The Black and Gold closed out the game on a seven point run to get the 80-69 win.
Tate finished the game with 21 points, going 4-8 from the field and a perfect 10-10 from the free throw line. Jones chipped in with 15 points, while Elie finished with 12 points and six rebounds and
JV Long had 10 points and six assists. The Aggies forced 17 turnovers, with six of those coming off of steals, while scoring 25 points off of takeaways.
OC's Jordan Box led the way for the Eagles, scoring 14 points, while Elijah Strickland had 12 points and Will Lienhard had a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.
The Aggies are now 1-1 on the season, while Oklahoma Christian falls to 0-2 after the Heartland/LSC Challenge.
Cameron will be on the road again next week as they head to Warrensburg, Mo., November 16-17, to face Central Missouri and Maryville.Â
