LAWTON, Okla. – The Cameron men's basketball team used three-point shooting to take down Tarleton State 64-63 for their first Lone Star Conference victory of the season on Saturday evening.
Â
The Aggies still captured the win despite an early first half struggle where they failed to net a bucket until nine minutes in the game. Until that time, CU only managed three points from free throws, while TSU took advantage of the earl struggle to take a 12 point lead, 15-3.
Â
The Texans didn't get too far though because CU chained a 14-2 run to tie the game at 17-all with 6:52 left of the first half. TSU built their lead back up to seven heading into halftime after shooting 39 percent from the field with four treys and a 7-for-12 effort at the line.
Â
At the half, CU had shot 37 percent from the field, 27 percent from deep and went 5-for-6 at the stripe.
Â
Out of the locker room, CU went on a nine point run to grab their first lead of the game, 35-33. But the Texans had a run of their own, outscoring the Aggies 14-4 to take an eight point advantage, 47-39, down to ten minutes remaining.
Â
That's when the Aggies got hot beyond the arc, making three straight on their possessions to close the deficit to one possession. With just a Texan layup in between, CU scored seven straight points off a pair of three-pointers and a free throw to nab their lead back 55-53 with five minutes on the clock.
Â
TSU's Josh Hawley took a six point run of his own to put his team back at a four point edge, but with four minutes to go, CU kept the Texans to just four points while scoring nine themselves. At 1:35
Bryce Elie tied the game at 62-all with a spinning layup as he drew the foul and made the extra point.
Â
On the other end of the court, CU fouled, but TSU only made one of two shots to put the Texans up by one; however, they fouled
Zach Dumas who made both shots for the 66-63 lead.
Â
TSU brought the ball up the court, but Cameron sent the ball out of bounds leaving four seconds on the clock and the ball in TSU possession. The Texans missed their last second layup as time expired for the Cameron victory.
Â
Cameron ended up draining six treys in the second half, paired with 56 percent shooting from the field and 80 percent at the stripe, while TSU made just two three-pointers and shot 40 percent on the floor and 50 percent at the line.
Â
TSU out-rebounded the Aggies 36-30.
Â
Delano Jones and
Bryce Elie led the Aggies with 13 points each, and
JV Long followed up with 12 points, nine boards and six assists.
Â
TSU's Hawley led his squad with 20 points and seven boards with four made three-pointers, while Jesse Hill and Corinthian Ramsey added 12 and 10 points, respectively.
Â
The win brings CU to 1-1 in the league and 4-4 overall, while TSU is also 1-1 in the LSC but 4-3 on the year.
