KINGSVILLE, Texas – The Cameron men's basketball team battled No. 23 Texas A&M-Kingsville on Thursday night and fell 63-59, moving to 1-2 in Lone Star Conference play.
The Aggies fell back below .500 at 4-5 with the loss and now have two league losses, while the Javelinas are now 2-0 in LSC play with a 9-1 overall mark.
Cameron led 28-21 after 20 minutes of play, going 10-23 from the field and 4-9 from both the perimeter and the charity stripe. CU started out strong, using a nine point run to go up 9-2 to start the game. They held the lead throughout the first half and after the Javelinas cut the deficit to one on a Caelan Neal three pointer, the Aggies used a six point run to go up by seven in the final minutes of the first.
The Aggies largest lead of the game came just eight seconds into the second half, as
Delano Jones hit a three pointer to go up 31-21. From there, the ranked Javelinas made their run and an eight point rally got them back to within one at the 13:50 mark. After trading buckets, TAMUK made another run and this time found themselves on the winning end of a seven point lead. The Black and Gold got into foul mode down the stretch and pulled the deficit back to within three points with seven seconds left, but clutch free throw shooting from the home team sealed the 63-59 win.
Tyler Williams led the Aggies with 13 points, going 4-4 from the free throw line, while
JV Long chipped in 11 points and had four steals. As a team, CU shot just over 38 percent from the field and went 6-18 from three. They also hit just 61 percent of their free throws. Cameron turned the ball over an uncharacteristic 17 times, while forcing 16 from their opponent, seven of which came from steals.
Trey Sumpter was the only Javelinas in double figures as he had a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds. TAMUK shot 37.7 percent from the field and just 23.8 percent from the perimeter.
Cameron will continue their LSC road trip on Saturday, Nov. 9 when they visit Angelo State starting at 4 p.m.
