Aggie men return home to face Western and Eastern New Mexico

Game Notes

First tip:
- The Aggie men's basketball team has some key games this week as they host Western New Mexico and Eastern New Mexico for the first two games of the final home stand of the season.
- Cameron came away with a 1-1 record last week as they fell to West Texas A&M, 87-82, but upset the then No. 13 ranked UT Permian Basin Falcons 90-87.
- CU held tight to the Buffs for most of the game but the 35-19 free throw attempt differential seemed to be the difference for WT; Tyler Williams led the Ags with 21 points, while Tyus Momoh chipped in 16, while going 4-4 from three.
- Cameron outlasted the Falcons 90-87, holding off a second half charge that saw UTPB outscore CU 53-45 in the second half; CU shot 52.5 percent from the field, while JV Long led them with 21 points and six assists, as Trey Hall chipped in 18 points.
- The Aggies offense is averaging 76.4 points per game, while on defense they are limiting their opponents to an average of 72.6 points.
- Cameron is the third best shooting team in the LSC in three point shooting, while ranking fourth in perimeter defense.
- CU is one of the best teams in the conference and nation in controlling the ball, averaging just 11.4 turnovers per contest, while collecting 14.7 assists per game.
- Long is ranked in the top-25 in the league in scoring, top-12 in rebounding, top-4 in assists, and top-14 in steals, while shooting a LSC eighth best 80.6 percent from the free throw line.
- Momoh has improved his shooting in the last five games, shooting 62 percent from the perimeter and averaging 13.4 points per game during that span.
 
South Central Regional:
The NCAA Division II Regional Rankings were released on Wednesday, and the Aggies were among six Lone Star Conference schools included in the rankings. CU was ranked sixth in the region, while Tarleton is first, WT is third and UTPB is fourth. Texas A&M-Commerce and Texas A&M-Kingsville were ranked behind the Aggies in seventh and 10th.
 
About Western New Mexico:
- The Mustangs have now lost 10 games in a row after falling to Eastern New Mexico in their last game, 83-77.
- WNMU is last in the LSC in both scoring offense and defense, with a scoring margin of -19.0 points.
- Western is shooting just 35.6 percent from the field, 27.3 percent from the perimeter, and 63.8 percent from the free throw line.
- The Mustangs are last in the conference in assists, blocked shots, and steals, and are second to last in rebounds.
- Jordan Erniquez, the coach's brother, is leading the team with 12.9 points per game, while shooting just 30.2 percent from the field.
- Willie McCray averages 11.2 points per game, and has a team high 2.4 assists and 1.1 steals per contest.
- Latrell Spivey is just shy of averaging a double-double with 9.6 points and 9.3 rebounds per game; he is third in the LSC in rebounding.
 
The series vs. WNMU:
- CU leads 5-3.
- Their game in January was the first one between the two teams in 12 years.
- Last Meeting: January 14, 2017 in Silver City, N. M. (75-61 CU win)
 
Last time vs. the Mustangs:
The Aggies overcame a poor shooting night in their first meeting with WNMU to win 75-61, after outscoring their opponent 48-31 in the second half. CU held the Mustangs to under 30 percent from the field and turned the ball over just six times in the win. Long had 17 points, Elish Benjamin added 14, and Hall chipped in 10 rebounds for Cameron. McCray had 15 points to lead Western in the loss.
 
About Eastern New Mexico:
- The Greyhounds have had an up-and-down season, but have now won two straight, most recently beating in-state rival Western New Mexico 83-77.
- ENMU is averaging 76.7 points per game, while shooting 43 percent from the field, 35.3 percent from long range, and a league worst 63 percent from the charity stripe.
- Eastern is ranked fifth in the nation in free throw attempts and eighth in offensive rebounds per game.
- Marquise Harris leads the team with 14.2 points per game, but has not played since January 21.
- Joe Clarke is second on the team with 12.1 points per game, while shooting 37.5 percent from the field.
- Lamarquis Thompson is also averaging 10+ points this season with 10.1 per game, while Chris Lewis leads ENMU with 7.0 rebounds per contest to go along with 7.7 points.
 
The series vs. ENMU:
- CU leads 24-20.
- The Aggies have won the last five matchups with the Greyhounds.
- Last Meeting: January 12, 2017 in Portales, N.M. (78-66 CU win)
 
Last time vs. the Greyhounds:
The Aggies used a 46-35 second half back in January to get the first win of the season over ENMU. CU shot just 56 percent from the charity stripe, but hit 10-20 from three point range and held their opponent to shooting just 39.7 percent from the field and 31.8 percent from three to help them get the win. Long had 16 points to lead Cameron, while Momoh and Jalen Nicholas each had 12 points. Clarke had a team high 13 points for Eastern. 

Next up:
Following Saturday's contest with the Greyhounds, CU will have just one regular season game left, a showdown with rival Midwestern State that will take place on Tuesday, Feb. 21 at 7:30 p.m.
