LAWTON, Okla. – The Cameron women's basketball team defeated Western New Mexico 75-62 on Thursday evening in the Aggie Gym.
Four Aggies scored in the double digits with
Savanna James leading the way with a 19 point, 15 rebound double-double effort – her seventh of the season.
Charron Montgomery added 15 points and had six rebounds and led CU with eight assists.
Jamie Bonnarens chipped in 15 points and
Ava Battese ten.
Cristina Soriano accounted for five of the Ags' ten steals.
The Aggies jumped to a hot 8-0 start keeping the Mustangs from scoring for over three minutes. However, six first quarter turnovers and missed layups plagued CU as WNMU contested with the Aggies for two ties and eight lead changes across the first half.
The Mustangs had added four first half treys, keeping the Aggies quiet from beyond the arc until the final two minutes of the half where back-to-back three-pointers got Cameron out of a deficit. The Aggies would not trail again.
Just as they started the game, CU put up a 9-1 run to open the second half and kept on the gas pedal to outscore WNMU 20-7 in the third quarter where the Mustangs shot just 17 percent from the field.
The Aggies furthered their advantage to their largest of 22 points in the fourth quarter and still WNMU put up a fight improving to 33 percent from the field and outscoring in the final frame 23-19 but it would not be enough as Cameron nabbed the 75-62 win.
Overall, Cameron shot 39 percent from the field, 17 percent from the arc and 65 percent at the line. WNMU went 31 percent on the floor, 22 percent from out deep and 79 percent from the stripe.
Cameron advances to 10-13 overall and 8-9 in the Lone Star Conference. WNMU is now 4-20 and 0-17 in the league.
The Aggies will take on Eastern New Mexico at 2 p.m. on Saturday for their homecoming game.
