LAWTON, Okla. – The Cameron women's basketball team fell to No. 21 Eastern New Mexico 81-72 at the Aggie Gym on Saturday afternoon. CU is now 10-14 overall this season and 8-10 in Lone Star Conference play, while the ranked Greyhounds are now 20-5 and 16-2 in league play.
Cameron used a 6-2 run in the final minute of the first quarter to knock down a once three possession ENMU lead to just one, which set up for a second frame opening three-pointer from
Brittany Hill to tie the game at 19-all.
However, the Aggies had trouble battling the Greyhounds' seven first half three-pointers while making only one themselves. The Aggies kept it inside shooting 45 percent from the field and 4-for-7 at the line while keeping ENMU off the stripe entirely in the opening half. By the second quarter, ENMU had extended their lead to double digits and led 43-33 at halftime.
In the third quarter, the Aggies broke for an early eight point run to bring themselves back within two possessions and would outscore ENMU by a narrow 18-17 margin yet saw a double digit deficit again in the final period. CU kept the Greyhounds to just 1-for-7 from beyond the arc; however, ENMU would make up for it with a 13-for-17 free throw effort, matching the 21 points the Ags put up in the fourth to maintain their advantage and win 81-72.
For the game, CU shot 41.2 percent from the field, while going just 4-20 from three and 12-19 from the charity stripe.
Cristina Soriano and
Jamie Bonnarens both finished with 18 points, a career high for Soriano, who also had seven rebounds and six assists for CU.
Charron Montgomery chipped in 15 points, going 6-9 from the field.
Eastern shot just over 46 percent from the field, while going 8-21 from the perimeter, and 13-17 from the free throw line. ENMU was led by Daeshi McCants, who had 20 points and eight rebounds, while Johna McClelland had 16 points and eight rebounds.
The Aggies will have a quick turnaround, as they host rival Midwestern State on Tuesday, Feb. 21 for their annual "Think Pink" game.
