KINGSVILLE, Texas – The Aggie women's basketball team suffered a cold shooting night, that led to them falling 69-54 at Texas A&M-Kingsville on Saturday.
Kingsville built up their lead early with runs of seven and eight points to make it 18-7 by the end of the first quarter. The two teams traded points back-and-forth in the second quarter, before the Javelinas stretched their lead out to 13 points and ended the half with a layup from Shaq Dubose to take the 39-26 lead into the break.
Cameron made just eight of their 27 field goal attempts in the first half, going 3-15 from three-point range.
Natalie Halbleib and
Charron Montgomery each had six points at the half, while Meesha Wade led Kingsville with nine points.
Following a three pointer from TAMUK to start the second half, CU went on an 8-0 run of their own to cut the lead to just eight, but by the end of the third quarter, the lead was back to nine points at 52-43. Three minutes into the final quarter, Cameron used a 5-0 run to make it 54-48. Kingsville responded with a 5-0 run of their own to extend it back to 11 points with 6:12 left in the game. The Javelinas would close out the game on a 7-2 run in the final two minutes of play to get the 69-54 victory.
The Aggies shot just 25.8 percent from the field during the game, going just 4-23 from the perimeter and 16-24 from the free throw line. They set season lows for points and field goal percentage; however they did force 23 turnovers, with 13 coming off of steals.
Jamie Bonnarens led CU with 12 points to go along with five rebounds, while
Caitlin Clancy had 10 points and six rebounds off the bench.
Texas A&M-Kingsville shot 37.9 percent from the field, while going just 4-14 from three-point range and 21-34 from the charity stripe. Wade finished with 18 points for the Javelinas.
The win drops CU to 8-12 on the season and 6-8 in Lone Star Conference play, while the Javelinas are now 10-10 and 5-9 in league play.
