CANYON, Texas – The Aggies dropped their third straight game as they fell 86-69 at West Texas A&M on Thursday night. Cameron is now 8-13 overall and 6-9 in Lone Star Conference play.
The first quarter was a competitive one, as neither team held more than a three point lead throughout the 10 minutes of play. However, CU got the early advantage by winning the quarter 25-24, thanks to a three pointer from
Jamie Bonnarens in the final seconds of play. In the second quarter, the teams traded buckets back-and-forth until WT used a 12-2 run to take a 7 point lead with 4:12 left in the half. Cameron responded with a 10-2 run of their own to take back the lead with just under two minutes to play in the second quarter. The Lady Buffs then went on an 8-0 run to end the half, leading 50-53 heading into the break.
CU shot 50 percent from both the field and three point line in the first 20 minutes of play, while making all seven of their free throws. West Texas shot over 64 percent from the field and 57 percent from long range in the first.
Savanna James led CU at the break with 12 points and five rebounds, while Allie Decker had 12 points for the home squad.
After trailing by nine points at the halfway point of the third quarter, Cameron used a 6-0 run to cut the lead back down to three points. That was close as the Black and Gold would get, as WT extended their lead, using an 18-6 run in the fourth to go up by 19 late in the game. A layup with 24 seconds left from James got two back for CU and finished off the game, 86-69.
The Aggies finished with a 43.9 percent field goal percentage, while going 6-15 from three-point range and 13-15 from the free throw line. They turned the ball over 21 times, which led to 16 points for WT. James finished with 20 points and 11 rebounds for her sixth double-double of the season. Bonnarens finished the game with 16 points, while
Cristina Soriano chipped in 10 points and six assists.
West Texas A&M, who is now 18-6 overall and 11-4 in league play, shot a scorching 62.3 percent from the field, hitting 9-18 from the perimeter and 11-14 from the charity stripe. They scored 40 points in the paint and got 24 points from off of their bench. Watson finished with a team-high 16 points and nine assists, while Decker had 15 and Madison Parker had 14.
Cameron will finish off their road stretch at UT Permian Basin next, which will be Saturday, Feb. 11 at 2 p.m.
