LAWTON, Okla. – The Cameron University softball team upset No. 6 West Texas A&M in walk-off fashion as
Paige Daino drove in the tying and game winning runs on a one out single in the bottom of the seventh; this was all after
Breezy McComas had a record breaking performance at the plate in just the first four innings of play.
McComas entered the day tied with Daino, former teammate
Sonora Zukerman, and Leslie Martini for the Cameron career homerun record. All four women were sitting at the top with 43 homers apiece, after Daino and McComas tied the record in back-to-back fashion last Saturday against Eastern New Mexico. McComas changed that in the first inning of Friday's game as she drove a ball over the left-field fence to put her alone at the top of the CU homerun leader board with 44.
That homer, a three run blast, would give the Aggies the early lead in this one, but WT answered in the top of the second with three of their own, two via a homer, to tie the game. Cameron responded with three more runs in the bottom of the inning, this time coming on a Daino RBI walk and a McComas two RBI single.
In the top of the third, the Lady Buffs kept answering with four more runs thanks to a pair of two run long balls to give them a 6-7 lead. CU countered the jab with a four run inning of their own in the bottom of the fourth, and once again McComas stepped up big, driving in all four runs on a grand slam. At that point in the game she was 3-3 with two homers and nine RBI, which added to her career homer total, broke the CU record for RBI in a game, and tied the Lone Star Conference record.
The two teams traded one run innings in the fifth and sixth, as WT got a run in the fifth on a solo homer, and then the Aggies added to their lead to make it 11-8 as
Tori Smith came in to score on a balk by the Lady Buff pitcher.
Things got crazy again in the seventh, as West Texas scored four runs in the top of the inning to take a 12-11 lead with only a half an inning left.
In the bottom of the seventh, Cameron started the comeback threat right away as three straight walks loaded the bases with no outs. After a fielder's choice by
Callie Busby that saw
Annie Combs get thrown out at home for the first out, Daino came up to the plate. She watched the first ball miss high and then fouled off the second pitch to even the count at 1-1. On the next pitch, Daino drove the ball up the through the middle of the diamond, allowing
Brenna Busby and
Kaytlyn Kizarr to come around and score the tying and winning runs, giving CU the 13-12 walk-off win.
McComas finished the game 3-3 with the two homers and nine RBI; she was previously tied for the CU record with seven RBI in a previous game. Daino reached base all five times with four walks, one hit, and three RBI.
Kylee Moore and Shanna McBroom each had two homers for WT, with McBroom driving in five runs and Moore driving in four.
The win improves the Black and Gold to 29-13 overall this season and 17-4 in league play, while WT is now 32-7 overall and 17-5 in LSC games. CU is now second in the LSC standings by a half a game.
Cameron and West Texas will play the final two games of the series tomorrow starting at 1 p.m.
