SAN ANGELO, Texas – The Cameron University softball team used a two run sixth inning to advance to the Lone Star Conference Championships semifinal, beating Texas A&M-Commerce 7-5 early on Friday.
The Aggies will now move on to play the No. 2 seed, West Texas A&M at 4 p.m. to see who will move on to the finals that will take place on Saturday at 2 p.m.
Against the Lions, CU got off to a slow start as a three run homer and a RBI single in the first gave TAMUC an early 4-0 lead.
The Aggies got one of those runs back in the bottom of the inning, as
Abbey Warren drove in
Breezy McComas on a RBI single.
After A&M-Commerce extended their lead back out to four with a sacrifice fly in the second inning, Cameron struck for their own four run inning in the bottom of the second. A bases loaded walk from All-LSC first teamer
Brenna Busby cut the score to 5-2, and then in the next at bat, her sister
Callie Busby cleared the bases with a double to right center, evening the game up at four runs apiece.
The offense for both teams disappeared in the third, fourth, and fifth innings, as there was just two hits combined during that span.
In the bottom of the sixth, the Busby sisters led off the inning with back-to-back singles for CU. After advancing to third and second on a sacrifice bunt, B. Busby scored on a
Kaylyn Smith single, giving CU their first lead of the game. C. Busby then came in to score on a wild pitch in the next at bat to give Cameron a small two run cushion.
That is all
Bethany Hines would need as she retired 15 straight to close out the game for her 25th win of the season. She struck out five while giving up the five earned runs on seven hits.
The Aggies had 10 hits as a team, with the Busbys, Warren, and Smith each tallying two hits.
Cameron is now 33-17 overall this season while Texas A&M-Commerce falls to 34-20.
