Dumas reaches career high in 101-79 win over Western New Mexico

LAWTON – Zach Dumas scored a career high 24 points as the Cameron men cruised past Western New Mexico 101-79 on Saturday evening.

The game was the highest scoring this season by the Aggies and the first time since Dec. 13, 2015 that CU scored 100 points or more when the defeated Bacone 100-67 in the Aggie Gym.

In addition to his 24 points, Dumas also added three steals and three assists. Delano Jones joined him in double figures scoring 16 points alongside Johann Tate with 14 points, JV Long 11 points and Jordan Lewis 11 points.

Jones had a team best eight rebounds, and Long a team best five assists. Elish Benjamin tallied four blocks.

The Aggies finished the game with 20 assists and each side had an even 37 rebounds.

CU shot 52 percent from the field with 12 made three-pointers and went 17 for 25 at the line. The Mustangs shot 41 percent on the floor, had six treys and went 27 for 38 from the stripe.

Cameron used a flurry of treys to stay in contention after WNMU opened the game with a 15-4 run across the first five minutes.

CU chipped at their lead from deep, draining seven three-pointers including three straight to take a nine point advantage of their own, 31-23 with nine minutes remaining. Lewis and Jones accounted for three treys each.

However, fouls would cost CU as the Mustangs scored ten unanswered points, including six from free throws to get a 42-40 edge. They fended off CU in the final two minutes with two three-pointers of their own to retain a 48-46 lead at the half.

In the opening half both sides shot over 50 percent from the field, while CU doubled WNMU's three-pointers totaling eight. The Mustangs made up for it at the stripe, going 14 for 18 compared to CU's 4 for 8 effort.

The second half started with back and forth action until five minutes in when CU broke for a 19-5 run, which included a stretch of 11 unanswered points, which brought them a 79-62 edge down to eight minutes left.

Cameron held steady to win 101-79 to move to 6-11 overall and 2-6 in the Lone Star Conference. WNMU drops to 3-13 and 0-7 in the league.
