About the Aggies:
Cameron is on a two game winning streak for the first time since the first three games of the season. Their win against Midwestern State improved their league record to 3-6 as they are now tied for seventh in the LSC standings heading into the second half of the conference schedule. The Aggies are averaging almost 74 points per game while shooting 42.7 percent from the field and 34.4 percent from three. They also lead the LSC in fewest turnovers and are second in three pointers made per contest.
JV Long leads the team with 10.1 points per game while ranking fifth in the league in assists and fourth in steals. Additionally,
Tyler Williams is averaging just over nine points while four others are scoring over eight points each time out.
Scouting the Texans:
Tarleton State is now 5-4 in the Lone Star Conference after splitting last week's games against ranked West Texas A&M and UT Permian Basin. TSU leads the league in blocks with Josh Hawley ranking first with two rejections per contest. Hawley is also the team leader in rebounding and has had eight double-doubles on the season. Corinthian Ramsey leads the Texans and is third in the conference with 18.3 points per game. Ramsey has reached the 20 point threshold seven times this season, with his last coming in the loss to UTPB when he scored 21 points while going 5-13 from three.
Last time vs. TSU:
Cameron notched their first LSC win earlier this season by taking down the Texans at home, 64-63. CU responded from a seven point halftime deficit and shot 56 percent in the second half to secure the win. TSU went up by one in the final minute of play, but a pair of
Zach Dumas free throws gave CU the one point advantage. A good defensive stop on the other end of the court then secured the win for Cameron.
Delano Jones led CU with 13 points, while
JV Long was one rebound shy of a double-double with 12 points and nine rebounds. TSU's Josh Hawley led all scorers with 20 points, as three other Texans reached double-figures in scoring.
The series:
- Tarleton leads 27-11.
- The Aggies have won just three times in Stephenville, Texas.
- Last Meeting: December 1, 2017 in Lawton, Okla. (64-63 CU win).
Scouting the Lions:
Texas A&M-Commerce had won four games straight before falling to WT and UTPB last week. They then bounced back with a 95-56 win over Dallas Christian on Monday. Willie Rooks led the Lions with 19 points while Dorian Armstrong chipped in 17 points off the bench. TAMUC ranks first in the LSC in scoring defense and field goal defense, which they also rank in the top-20 in the nation in those two categories. Reggie Reid is first in the league with almost two steals per contest while also averaging 14.4 points per game. He and Rooks are the only Lions averaging over 10 points per game. Rooks averages 16.6 points and is third best in the LSC in three point shooting, averaging 2.6 made threes per outing.
Last time vs. TAMUC:
The Aggies opened up conference play with a one point loss to the Lions earlier this season. It was a close game once the second half started, as neither team led by more than seven points during the final 20 minutes of play. CU would go cold late in the half, missing their last four shots from the field as Commerce closed out the game on a six point run to win 69-68.
Delano Jones once again led the Aggies with 13 points while
Tyus Momoh hit three shots from the perimeter on his way to a 12 point outing. Dorian Armstrong led the Lions with 22 points, and Willie Rooks chipped in 16 points in the win.
The series:
- The Lions lead the series 31-22.
- Cameron has won just three of the last seven meetings against A&M-Commerce.
- Last Meeting: November 30, 2017 in Lawton, Okla. (69-68 TAMUC win).
Looking back:
Cameron won back-to-back games for the first time since the start of the season after taking down Midwestern State their last time out. The Aggies struggled to get going in the first half against the Mustangs, scoring just 26 points and shooting 30 percent from the field while trailing by six at the break. They responded by putting up 50 points in the second 20 minutes posting an over 51 percent clip from the field and knocking down 6-9 from the perimeter.
JV Long scored 17 of his 20 points in the second half, while
Elish Benjamin and
Johann Tate each chipped in 12 points to CU's winning effort.
Looking ahead:
The Aggies will be back at home for their next four contests, starting with a rematch against Angelo State on Thursday, Feb. 1.
