LAWTON, Okla. – The Cameron men's basketball team exploded for a 103-69 win against Newman in their home opener on Friday night.
Five Aggies reached double-figures in the offensive onslaught, as the team shot 51 percent from the floor and went 10-20 from three. Cameron also stepped up the defensive intensity with four blocks and 10 steals against the Jets.
Johann Tate paced CU with 19 points while going 8-10 from the free throw line.
Zach Dumas chipped in 16 points on 8-11 from the charity stripe, while
Tyus Momoh was perfect from the perimeter, going 3-3 and scoring 12 points.
Dalton Vinson performed well in his first collegiate game, recording a double-double with 15 points, 11 rebounds and three blocks, and
Jordan Lewis had 12 points, going 6-6 from the free throw line.
The Aggies were over halfway to 100 in the first half, outscoring the Jets 54-37, while shooting 52 percent from the floor and going 7-14 from three. Despite an early push from NU to start the second half, Cameron got back on pace to win the second half by 17 points and secure the blowout win.
Newman was led by Marshawn Blackmon, who had 21 points and 10 rebounds, while Dametrius Walker chipped in 16 and Juwan Davenport had 11. As a team, they shot 38 percent from the floor and hit just four of their 23 three point attempts.
Cameron will complete the Heartland/Lone Star Conference Challenge on Saturday, as they take on Oklahoma Christian, who lost to Texas A&M-Commerce on Friday, at 4 p.m.
