Late scoring drought costs CU at Dallas Baptist

DALLAS, Texas – A scoring drought in the final five minutes cost the Aggies, as they were unable to complete the season sweep of Dallas Baptist on Saturday, falling 69-62.

Cameron got off to a fast start, going on an 11-2 run during the first eight minutes of play, while DBU was struggling on the opposite side of the court, going just 1-15 from the floor and 0-9 from three to start the game. However, the Patriots bounced back by going on a 12-4 run to get to within one point. Johann Tate ended the DBU run with a three pointer, but the home team used a 13-5 stretch to build up their lead to 27-20 with under a minute left in the half. Kendal Scott got Cameron to within five with a layup off the assist by Jalen Nicholas to end the first half.

Despite a good start, the Black and Gold shot just 27.3 percent during the first 20 minutes of play, going 2-13 from the perimeter and just 2-2 from the foul line. Nicholas led the team with six points and seven rebounds, while Cole Lehr and Zach Dumas each had four points. DBU shot 31.3 percent from the floor in the opening frame, going 5-20 from deep and 2-3 from the charity stripe; Chandler Jacobs has a game-high eight points at the break.

Both teams found their rhythm to start the second half, as Cameron used a 21-15 run in the first eight minutes of the half to take back the lead 43-42. Jordan Lewis had 10 points during that run while CU as a team went 7-13 from the field. The game was back and forth from there until a layup from Zach Lord at the 4:27 mark began an 11-3 stretch for the Patriots, who recorded their 30th straight home victory with the 69-62 win.

Lewis finished the game with a team-high 14 points, going 5-9 from the field, 2-5 from three, and 2-2 from the foul line. Nicholas earned his first double-double of the season, scoring 12 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. Additionally, the current Lone Star Conference leading scorer, Dumas, scored 11 points on just 3-13 from the field, but hit all five of his free throw attempts; he also added three steals.

As a team, Cameron shot just 30.9 percent from the field, going 5-26 from long range, but connecting on all but one of their 16 free throw attempts. They had 10 steals and 14 assists in the loss.

Dallas Baptist was led in scoring by Jacobs, who scored 16 points, while Jonathyn Washington added 13 points and Carson Hughes had 12. The Patriots did not fare much better than CU offensively, shooting 35.6 percent from the floor while going 9-35 from the perimeter and 18-24 from the foul line.

Cameron is now 4-8 on the season, including a 3-3 record against teams that they have played twice: DBU, Lubbock Christian, and Arkansas-Fort Smith. Dallas Baptist is now 9-4 overall with the win.

The Aggies finished up non-conference play and will open up 2019 with five straight home LSC battles, starting with Tarleton State on Jan. 3.
