PORTALES, N.M. –
JV Long and
Delano Jones powered the Aggie men's basketball team's second half comeback as they took down Eastern New Mexico on Saturday, 60-58.
Cameron scored the first point of the game on a free throw, but then struggled to get going after that. They went 0-7 from the field to start the half, and did not make their first shot from the field until the 16:16 mark. CU wasn't alone through as Eastern New Mexico hit a three minute scoring drought of their own and at the 7:47 mark,
Jalen Nicholas hit a free throw to tie the game at 16 points apiece. However, after trading buckets, the Aggies went just 1-8 from the field to close out the half, as ENMU led 29-25.
Nicholas led the Aggies, who shot just 9-34 from the field and 2-11 from the perimeter, with six points at the break while Lewis had five. Pullum, Armani Pierce, and Zach Brown each had five points to lead the Greyhounds, while they shot 39 percent from the floor as a team through the first 20 minutes of play.
The Greyhounds came out firing in the second half and scored eight straight to go up 36-26 at the 17:17 mark in the second half. The Aggies slowly started to make their way back after that, scoring seven straight to chip away at the lead. However, ENMU maintained their lead throughout the next 10 minutes of action. It was not till the 5:44 mark when five straight points from Long cut the Eastern New Mexico lead to just one point.
The two teams traded buckets down the stretch and Cameron took their first lead since the start of the game with 1:15 left on a Jones four-point play. The Aggies missed some key free throws in the next few possessions, which led to Lamarquis Thompson making a three point shot to put the home team back on top by one. After a timeout, the Black and Gold came back with their own three pointer as Jones nailed a shot from deep to give CU the 60-58 lead. The Greyhounds would get another look at a shot from deep, but it fell off the mark and the Aggies came away with the win.
Cameron outscored the Greyhounds 35-29 in the second half, with 28 of those points coming from the hot hands of Long and Jones.
Long finished with a game-high 17 points, with 15 of those coming in the second half alone; he also tied for the team lead with
Tyler Williams with rebounds. Jones scored 16 points in the game, scoring 13 of those in the second 20 minutes of play.
Thompson led ENMU with 15 points and nine rebounds, as Zach Parker had 11 points in the loss.
With the win, Cameron moves to 11-15 overall and more importantly, 7-10 in Lone Star Conference play. They now have a half game lead over Midwestern State for sixth place in the league standings, while the Greyhounds, who are now 10-15 overall and 5-11 in conference play, are in eighth.
The Aggies will close out their regular season at their Red River Rival, Midwestern State, on Tuesday, Feb. 20 starting at 7:30 p.m.
