Cameron falls to Mustangs in regular season finale

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – The Aggie men's basketball team's cold shooting second half led to an 80-72 loss to Midwestern State on Tuesday night in CU's 2017-18 regular season finale.

Cameron hit just 28.9 percent of their shots in the second half, going 4-17 from three point range. Tyler Williams led the Black and Gold with 15 points, as JV Long and Delano Jones each had 13. The Aggies turned the ball over 14 times, and were outscored 25-2 in fast break points.

Brandon Neel led the Mustangs with 27 points, scoring 16 in the second half alone, while Devante Pullum had 17 points and seven assists.

Cameron started out the game on fire, shooting over 70 percent and opening up the game on a 16-9 run, but they went on a scoring drought, allowing the Mustangs to cut the lead down to two with just under 10 minutes to play. Both teams struggled shooting from the field in the final minutes of the half, as no field goals were made from the eight minute mark to the four minute mark. The Aggies then scored seven quick points to jump out to an 11 point lead, Midwestern State bounced back by closing out the half on a 12-7 run. Cameron led by just three at the break, 37-34.

Long led the Aggies at the half with nine points, while Jones had eight. As a team, CU shot 48.1 percent from the floor in the first 20 minutes, going 5-9 from three point range and 6-8 from the charity stripe. Neel led MSU with 11 points at the break.

Five minutes into the second half, Midwestern State used a quick 13-2 run to take back the lead 49-45. The two teams battled back and forth throughout the remainder of the second half with neither team taking more than a six point lead in the final 10 minutes of minutes of play. However, the Aggies faded late, hitting a 0-4 spell, allowing the Mustangs to go back up 77-69 with under a minute to play. Tyus Momoh then hit a three point shot to with 24 seconds left to cut the deficit to just five, and while the Aggies had a couple of chances to erase more of the deficit, the MSU defense came up with three key blocks in the final seconds of play. The closed out the game with an old fashioned three point play to win 80-72.

The Aggies and Mustangs are now tied for sixth in the Lone Star Conference standings with each posting a 7-11 record during league play; CU finished the regular season 11-16 overall, while MSU posts an 11-17 season mark.

Cameron will have to wait until this weekend's LSC slate unfolds to see who and when they will play in the opening round of the conference tournament. The men's first round will be on Friday, March 2, while the Semi-finals will be played on Saturday, March 3, and the Finals will be on Sunday, March 4.
