Alvarado powers No. 21 Aggies to 5-3 win

ODESSA, Texas – The No. 21 Cameron University softball team completed the three game sweep of UT Permian Basin with a 5-3 win on Saturday afternoon.

The Aggies opened the game with a bang, recording five hits, including a two run homer from Kaitlyn Alvarado, to start the first. They scored the first two runs of the game on Alvarado's first collegiate homer and then two more came across the plate on a two RBI double off the bat of Annie Combs.

After starting the game with a four run first from the Black and Gold, both teams were scoreless through the next three innings. Cameron broke that drought with another run in the top of the fifth. Alvarado led off the inning with a single to left, and then Callie Busby Walked and Madyson Marvulli singled to load the bases with no outs. After a pitching change from the Falcons, Makaylah Ramirez came up to the plate and walked to give the Aggies the 5-0 lead.

UT Permian Basin responded with three runs of their own in the bottom of the inning, scoring their first run of the series on a single from Marzita Rojas, while the second and third runs scored on an Ashlynn Williams single.

Rylee Willmon was able to hold off the Falcon offense from there, giving up no hits in the final two innings. The junior transfer earned her sixth win of the season by going all seven innings, while giving up one earned run on nine hits with nine strikeouts.

Alvarado, Brenna Busby, and Marvulli each had a pair of hits in the game, while Alvarado and Combs led the Aggies with two RBI apiece.

Rojas led UTPB with three hits, as Williams had two hits and two RBI.

The win improves CU to 14-3 overall while they are now 6-0 in Lone Star Conference play after their second three game series sweep of the young season. UT Permian Basin is now 6-11 on the season and 0-6 in league games.

Cameron will next be in action on Tuesday, Feb. 27 as they host Northwestern Oklahoma State for a non-conference doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
