CU men win 67-58 over Javelinas

LAWTON – After a slow first half, Cameron turned on the jets to come away in the second to earn a 67-58 win over Texas A&M-Kingsville on Saturday evening.

While both sides didn't shoot well to start the game with CU shooting 28 percent and the Javs 23 percent, the Ags did open with a six point run finished with a three-pointer from JV Long. CU held a 22-17 lead at the break thanks to a buzzer beating layup by Chris Royal.

Boards were even at 20 apiece.

To start the second half, CU went on an 11-6 run to take a double digit lead, 33-23. By the seven minute marker, the Aggies had kept a three possession lead and built their edge up to their largest advantage of 13 points.

However, over a three minute stretch, TAMUK went on a 12-2 run that put them within one possession of the Aggies, 51-48, in large part thanks to a 6 for 7 effort at the line.

Both teams built their shooting back up to over 40 percent from the field, but it would be CU's free throw shooting making most of the difference as they shot 19 for 24 from the line in the second half.

Six straight free throws by CU took a two possession game out of the Javelinas reach. Cameron would win 67-58 to move to 9-13 overall and 5-8 in the Lone Star Conference. TAMUK drops to 12-10 and 4-7 in the league.

The Javelinas out-rebounded the Aggies 45 to 37, but TAMUK committed 19 turnovers to CU's nine, which the Ags cashed in for 17 points.

Long and Royal led the Aggies with 15 points each, and Long led the team in rebounding with eight boards.

Tyler Williams scored ten points and recorded four assists while Tyus Momoh had three steals.

TAMUK's Chris Boleware led the Javelinas with 16 points and Trey Sumpter with 13 points and 11 boards.
