STEPHENVILLE, Texas –
Callie Busby notches two homers and six RBI as the No. 21 Cameron softball team split a doubleheader with Tarleton State on Saturday, falling 6-4 in game one, but taking the second game 8-1.
Game one of the day was a back-and-forth affair between the Aggies and Texans. It was TSU who struck first, as Karli Herron homered in the second. Cameron answered right back with a run in the top of the third when C. Busby was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. TSU responded quickly, scoring a run in the bottom of the third to take back a one run lead.
Both teams put two runs on the scoreboard in the fourth. The Black and Gold scored their first run of the inning when
Kaylyn Smith stole second and the throw by the catcher was off the mark, allowing
Bethany Hines to score from third. Smith then scored on a sacrifice fly ball from
Annie Combs, making it 3-2 in favor of the Ags. That lead would disappear quickly, as Herron came up in the TexAnn half of the fourth and drove in two on her second homer of the game.
Trailing 4-3, and with two outs in the top of the fifth, C. Busby came up to bat and hit her third homer of the season to deep centerfield to tie the game at four runs apiece. However, Tarleton State answered with two more runs in the bottom of the inning and Jordan Withrow struck out three straight batters to close out the game 6-4 for TSU.
Hines received the loss in the circle, giving up six runs on eight hits in 4.1 innings of work.
Rylee Willmon came into the game for the final 1.2 innings and gave up just two hits.
Game two started with the Aggies getting on the board first, as C. Busby drove in her sister on a fielder's choice in the first.
Tarleton State responded in the bottom of the second by scoring a run on a single off the bat of Elizabeth Svienty, but after a scoreless third Cameron took back the lead thanks to a Combs RBI double that brought C. Busby home.
Both teams were held scoreless in the fifth and sixth innings, and in the seventh, the No. 21 Aggies broke the game open with a six run inning to go up 8-1.
Alyssa Osterdock led off the final inning with a double to centerfield, and then came in to score two batters later when
Brenna Busby reached on an error by the TSU centerfielder. After a pitching change, Smith singled to left to bring in another run and then once again the CU speed caused an error by the catcher on a double-steal, allowing B. Busby to cross the plate.
Kaitlyn Alvarado then walked and TSU went to the bullpen again, bringing in the starter from game one, Withrow. C. Busby came up to the plate and hit her second homer of the game off of Withrow, this time driving in three to extend CU's lead to seven.
Willmon sat down the TexAnns in order in the bottom of the inning to secure the win. The junior notched her eighth win of the season as she gave up just the one run on four hits with 5 Ks.
Smith led the Aggies with four hits on the day, while C. Busby had a big doubleheader, driving in six runs and scoring three of her own.
The split puts CU's record at 16-7 overall and 8-4 in league play, while Tarleton State moves to 18-6 and 6-6 in LSC contests.
Cameron will be back at home for their next conference battle, as they host Red River foe Midwestern State for a three game series, March 16-17.
