Aggies fall 3-2 to Midwestern State

LAWTON, Okla. – The Cameron softball team dropped the first game of a three game series against Midwestern State on Friday afternoon, falling 3-2.

Offense was hard to find at McMahon Field on Friday, as neither team did much to drive in runs in the five run pitching duel. Midwestern State totaled nine hits, but left 14 runners on base, while the Aggies totaled just four hits and left six on.

After getting out of a bases loaded situation in the top of the first, CU put the first run of the game on the board in the bottom of the inning. Brenna Busby walked to open the game and then advanced to second on a Kaylyn Smith single. After moving to third on a groundout by Kaitlyn Alvarado, B. Busby scored on a wild pitch to give the Black and Gold the early lead.

The Mustangs answered two innings later as Carli Woosley drove in a run on a sacrifice fly with one out and the bases loaded. Rylee Willmon was able to get out of trouble again by striking out Misty Muniz to end the third.

Both teams went scoreless in the fourth and fifth innings, but in the sixth, Midwestern State added two runs to the scoreboard to give them a 3-1 lead.

Cameron answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the inning, as Makaylah Ramirez walked with the bases loaded and one out to cut the deficit to one run. However, CU was unable to score another as MSU got back-to-back strikeouts to end the sixth and then got a one-two-three inning in the seventh to secure the win.

Willmon pitched well, giving up just the three earned runs on eight hits, but she walked four, which contributed to her fifth loss this season.

Of CU's four hits, Smith provided two, while Alyssa Osterdock and B. Busby had the other two.

The Aggies now sit at 16-8 on the season and 8-5 in Lone Star Conference play, while Midwestern State moves to 10-10 overall and 5-8 in league play.

Cameron will meet up again with the Mustangs on Saturday, as they conclude the three game series with a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
