CU women fall at ASU, beat Kingsville in first LSC matches

LAWTON, Okla. – The No. 17 Aggie women's tennis team split their first two Lone Star Conference matches of the season, falling 5-4 to Angelo State on Thursday and then beating Texas A&M-Kingsville 5-4 on Friday.

Against Angelo State, the Aggies opened the match up with a 2-1 lead. Melany Opolz and Rebeka Velasova earned an 8-3 win at No. 3, while Zhenia Shviadok and Mathilde Thibaudat battled to a tie break at No. 1, winning 9-8.

In singles, all but two of the matches went to three sets. Velasova recorded a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 6, and Sarah Frendo got the 6-4, 6-0 win at No. 3. With CU leading 4-1, the Belles responded with comeback wins at No. 1 and 2, and then another three set win at No. 5, leaving the match up to the No. 4 match. Opolz bounced back from a 6-3 loss in set one and won set two 7-5. However, ASU's Zoe Gubbels answered with a 7-6 win to secure the victory.

On Friday, at Texas A&M-Kingsville, Cameron led 2-1 after doubles again, this time with Shviadok and Thibaudat winning 8-6 at No. 1 and Frendo and Sara Petric winning 8-6 at No. 2.

However, the Javelinas made the match competitive, winning at No. 4, 5, and 6 in two sets. Shviadok dominated her opponent 6-0, 6-1 at No. 1 securing another point for CU, while Frendo earned the 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 3. The match was tied 4-4 with the No. 2 singles match to determine the outcome. Thibaudat won set one by a score of 6-3, but fell 7-5 in the second. She then outlasted her opponent 6-5 in the third set to secure the win for the Aggies.

Cameron is now 10-5 on the season and 1-1 in LSC matches. They will host Western New Mexico on Friday, April 6 for their next match. CU then welcomes Dallas Baptist to Lawton the next day on April 7.
