CU scores two runs early, but gives up nine straight in loss to No. 13 WT

CANYON, Texas – Despite jumping out to an early 2-0 lead, the Aggie softball team fell to No. 13 West Texas A&M on Friday night 9-2 to open up a three game series between CU and WT.

The night looked promising for Cameron as they scored a run in both the first and second innings to take the two run lead over the ranked Lady Buffs. In the first, Brenna Busby walked with two outs and then stole second. She was then driven in by her sister, Callie Busby, on a double to right center field. CU came right back in the second and this time, Annie Combs was hit by a pitch and then stole second with one out. Raley Long then drove in the CU third baseman on a RBI double of her own.

However, those would be the last runs Cameron would put on the board in game one of the weekend as WT scored two runs in the third, one in the fourth and three in both the fifth and sixth innings to win 9-2.

Rylee Willmon received the loss as she is now 13-7 on the season. The junior gave up five earned runs on 10 hits with just one strikeouts in her six innings in the circle.

Cameron managed just five hits as a team, each from a different player; Kaylyn Smith, Bethany Hines, C. Busby, Alyssa Osterdock, and Long each had a hit.

West Texas A&M was led by Ashley Hardin and Allie Smith each with two RBI, while Kilee Halbert struck out seven batters in her 16th win of the season.

The Aggies, who are now 26-13 overall and 13-9 in Lone Star Conference play, will take on the WT, who is now 32-6 and 15-4 in league games, in a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 1 p.m. to close out the series.
