Game Recap: Softball |

Busby goes 4-6 in DH loss to No. 13 WT

CANYON, Texas – The Cameron University softball team finished off a three game series at No. 13 West Texas A&M on Sunday, losing in the final two games 9-6 and 3-1; WT swept the three game weekend series.

In game one, the Black and Gold trailed early as WT scored a run on a solo homer in both the first and the fourth innings. CU finally got on the board in the fifth, as Annie Combs drove in a run on a sacrifice fly and Kaitlyn Alvarado singled in the second run to tie the game.

However, the Lady Buffs answered right back in the bottom of the fifth, scoring five runs, two on another Ashley Hardin homer, to take a 7-2 lead.

Cameron wouldn't go down easily though as the came right back and scored four runs in the top of the sixth inning to cut the deficit to just one run. CU loaded the bases to start out the inning, as Alyssa Osterdock singled, Tori Smith walked, and Madyson Marvullie singled. Brenna Busby then came up and tripled in all three runs to give her 24 RBI on the season. After Raley Long grounded out, B. Busby came in to score on a RBI groundout by her sister, Callie Busby to give CU their sixth run.

That was as close as the Aggies would get in game one, as they added two more insurance runs in the bottom of the inning and then retired CU in order in the seventh to earn the win.

Bethany Hines is now 12-7 as she got the loss, going 5.2 innings and giving up nine runs on nine hits with six strikeouts and three walks; Rylee Willmon recorded the final out in the sixth.

The Lady Buffs started game two like they did the first, scoring a run in the first inning and this time scoring two runs on Hardin's third homer of the day in the fourth.

Down 3-0, Cameron scored their lone run of the game in the top of the sixth, as B. Busby came in to score, while C. Busby was thrown out trying to steal second base.

Willmon pitched six strong innings, but her five walks were a big part of eighth loss on the season.

B. Busby led the Aggies with four hits, three runs scored, and three RBI on the day, while Long and Makaylah Ramirez each had two hits.

Hardin had a WT best five RBI on her three homers, while Shanna McBroom had four hits.

Cameron is now 26-15 this season and 13-11 in Lone Star Conference play, as WT improves to 34-6 overall and 17-4 in league contests.

The Aggies will play their final home series this upcoming weekend as they host Western New Mexico for a pair of doubleheaders April 20-21; the first three games will count as LSC contests.
