CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The Cameron men's tennis team will advance to their second straight Lone Star Conference Championship final as they took down UT Permian Basin 5-1 in the semifinal Friday afternoon.
The 44th ranked Aggies started out the match up 3-0, winning all three doubles matchups. At No. 2
Julen Gutierrez and
Stefan Svicevic got things started with an 8-3 win, as
Mateo Velasco and
Julien Aubry-Damon won at No. 3 8-6. Cameron's No. 1 duo of
Przemyslaw Zielinski and
Vinicius Santos had to battle for their win, but eventually came away victorious 9-7.
In singles, CU's one loss came at No. 4, as Velasco fell 6-3, 6-4. The Aggies secured the match with wins at No. 2 and No. 3 as both Santos and Gutierrez won their matches in two sets.
Cameron will move on to face Midwestern State in the finals, Saturday at 10 a.m. as the Mustangs defeated Western New Mexico in their semifinal match, 5-2.
The Aggies and Mustangs have a recent history of playing each other in high pressure matches. The two faced off in the LSC Final and the South Central Regional last season, with CU coming away with 5-4 wins in both instances. In their one battle this year, MSU took down the Black and Gold 6-3 in Wichita Falls, Texas.
