CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The No. 19 Cameron women's tennis team opened up the Lone Star Conference Championship with a 5-0 win over Western New Mexico in the quarterfinal on Friday morning.
The Aggies, who were named the tournament two seed after finishing second in the conference, dominated the Mustangs in their only regular season match 9-0.
On Friday morning, CU looked to pull the sweep of WNMU again, starting out the match 3-0. They started out with an 8-2 win from
Melany Opolz and
Rebeka Velasova at No. 3 and then added an 8-0 win from
Sarah Frendo and
Sara Petric at No. 2. The No. 18 ranked duo of
Zhenia Shviadok and
Mathilde Thibaudat wrapped up doubles play with an 8-3 win at No. 1 to give CU the three point lead heading into singles.
Needing just two wins to take the match, Petric made quick work of her opponent at No. 5, winning 6-1, 6-0 to give CU the 4-0 lead and then No. 23 Shviadok won 6-2, 6-0 in the top spot to clinch the win 5-0.
Cameron will now take on Tarleton State Friday evening at 6 p.m. to see who moves on to the LSC Championship final on Saturday.
