LAWTON, Okla. – The Cameron University softball team used a pair of sacrifice fly outs and a double steal to earn a 3-2 win over Western New Mexico on Sunday as they honored their three seniors in their final home game of the spring at McMahon Field.
Before the start of the contest on Sunday,
Lauren Mason,
Tori Smith, and
Annie Combs were all honored for their hard work on and off the field at Cameron.
When the game started, the Aggies were the first on the board as
Brenna Busby walked to lead off the first inning and then stole second. After she advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt, her sister
Callie Busby drove her in on a fly ball to center field to put CU up 1-0.
After scoreless second and third innings, it was C. Busby who got things started in the fourth. She singled up the middle and then moved to second on an infield hit from T. Smith.
Raley Long then hit a bloop single to right to load the bases with no outs. A batter later,
Alyssa Osterdock hit a ball to deep right field that brought in C. Busby to put the Black and Gold up 2-0. In the next at bat, CU pulled off the double steal with Long stealing second and T. Smith coming home to score.
It would not be unitil the sixth and seventh innings when a pair of solo home runs from the Mustangs cut the lead to just one run with only one out in the top of the seventh inning. However,
Bethany Hines came in to pitch in relief and got a pair of strikeouts to earn her second save of the season.
Rylee Willmon pitched strong for CU, giving up just two hits in the first five innings. Her only blemishes were the two homers, as she struck out four and did not allow a walk.
At the plate, Cameron totaled just five hits, with Long supplying two and C. Busby, T. Smith, and Combs recording the others.
The win moves the Aggies to 29-15 on the season and 16-11 in Lone Star Conference play. They will face No. 6 Angleo State in a three game series, April 27-28, to close out the regular season next weekend.
