SAN ANGELO, Texas- The Cameron softball team upset No. 6 Angelo State with a 2-1 win on Friday evening to ring in their 30th victory of the season.
While the Rambelles out-hit CU seven to three, the Aggies took advantage of a pair of errors in early innings to secure their lead and maintained it with great pitching from starter
Rylee Willmon and
Bethany Hines.
The win moves Cameron to 30-15 overall and 17-11 in the Lone Star Conference. ASU is now 43-6 and 23-5 in the league.
The Aggies struck first in the top of the second as
Kaylyn Smith stole third then scored on an error by the catcher to lead 1-0. In the bottom of the frame, ASU tied it up with a solo homer.
The go-ahead run occurred in the third inning when
Raley Long singled and
Brenna Busby scored on an error by the Rambelle right fielder.
The Aggie pitching staff and defense took over from there, allowing just two Rambelles in scoring position and prevented advancement. Willmon (16-8) was awarded the win and Hines captured her third save closing out the final 2.2 innings with three hits and no runs.
ASU's Brandy Marlett moved to (21-3) in the loss after tossing seven innings where she struck out eight.
Cameron and Angelo State close out the regular season on Saturday with a double header start at 1 p.m.
