LAWTON, Okla. – The Aggie softball team swept their Lone Star Conference doubleheader with Eastern New Mexico on Friday, 8-0 and 6-2, behind strong outings from
Bethany Hines and
Rylee Willmon.
Hines kicked off the doubleheader by facing just two batters over the minimum in the six inning contest. She set a career high with 11 strikeouts while giving up just two hits for her 11th win on the season.
The Cameron bats helped out their starter early by giving her a five run cushion after two innings of play. In the first,
Callie Busby drove in
Kaylyn Smith on a single up the middle and then
Abbey Warren walked with the bases loaded to drive in the second run. An inning later, Hines helped out her cause with a RBI infield single and then Warren came up clutch again with a two run base hit to give CU the five run lead.
After a scoreless third and fourth inning, the Aggies added two more in the bottom of the fifth.
Madyson Marvulli brought in pinch runner
Carly Johnson on a sacrifice fly to center field.
Annie Combs then came up to bat and singled up the middle to drive in Warren.
Cameron capped off the win with a C. Busby sacrifice fly that gave them the eight run-rule win in the sixth inning.
In game two, Willmon earned her 12th win with a strong outing of her own, giving two runs on four hits with five Ks and only one walk. Through six innings she had a one hit shutout going, with all of the Greyhounds runs coming in the seventh.
The Aggies had to battle the wind during the second game of the doubleheader, but they were able to use timely, smart hits to score their six runs. They started things off by scoring single runs in both the second and third innings. In the second
Alyssa Osterdock singled in Warren for CU's first run, while C. Busby collected another sacrifice fly for the second.
In the fifth, C. Busby added another RBI to her Friday total, as she drove in CU's third run on a double down the left field line. Cameron then added three more insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth to give them a 6-0 lead;
Lauren Mason, Combs, and Hines all had RBI in that inning. WNMU answered with their two runs in the seventh, but Willmon closed the door to secure the win.
Hines had a team-high five hits on the day, while C. Busby had four RBI and Warren had three.
The Aggies are now 24-11 on the year and 12-8 in LSC contests. They will face ENMU, who is now 16-25 and 8-15 in league play, in the finale of the three game series Saturday at 2 p.m.
