Lack of offense leads to 3-0 CU loss at LSC Tournament

SAN ANGELO, Texas – The Cameron University softball team struggled to get anything going offensively on Friday, as they fell 3-0 to No. 15 Tarleton State in the opening round of the Lone Star Conference Tournament.

The Aggies were only able to record three hits against the LSC's Co-Pitcher of the Year Jordan Withrow, who walked two and struck out seven in the complete game shutout.

On the other side of the diamond, Rylee Willmon was able to hold TSU to just three runs even though she gave up 10 hits on the day. The conference's Co-Newcomer of the Year struck out three batters and left nine runners on base, but got no run support in the loss.

Tarleton State scored early, plating two runs in the first inning, as Megan Durante singled in Georgia Capell and then Tanna Huie drove in Meghann Wrinkle on a sacrifice foul out. CU's Willmon held the TexAnns scoreless through the next four innings, but in the sixth TSU added another insurance run when Wrinkle tripled to bring Capell home to score again.

The Aggies best chance of scoring game in the top of the fourth inning, when Callie Busby led off with a single and then Kaitlyn Alvarado walked, putting runners on first and second with no outs. However, that threat disappeared fast as the next three batters went down in order to end the inning.

The three Cameron hits came off of the bats of C. Busby, Makaylah Ramirez, and Annie Combs.

Capell led TSU with three hits and two runs scored, while Wrinkle and Nyka Wood each had a pair of hits in the win.

Tarleton State moves on to the tournament semifinal, where they will face the No. 1 seed and tournament host Angelo State at 6:30 p.m.

Cameron is currently ranked sixth in the South Central Region and the top eight teams make it to the postseason. The NCAA Division II Selection Show airs on Monday, May 7, at 9 a.m. on the NCAA website.
