Sunday's 6-1 loss at Kingsville ends CU's season

KINGSVILLE, Texas – Needing to win to earn a spot in the Lone Star Conference Tournament, the Cameron University baseball team managed just two hits in a 6-1 loss to Texas A&M-Kingsville on Sunday in CU's final game of 2018.

The Aggies two hits came late in the game, as in the seventh Luke Hughes tripled, but was thrown out trying to score on a fielder's choice two batters later and then in the eighth, Colton Adams reached on an infield single to load the bases.

Already down 3-0 as the Javelinas scored two runs in the third and another in the fifth, CU's only run of the game in the eighth inning. Kameron Good got things started by being hit by a pitch and then Mitch Sloan walked to put runners on first and second with one out. After Nik Sanchez struck out for the second out of the inning, Adams singled to the shortstop to load the diamond. Good then came home to score on a failed pickoff attempt by the TAMUK pitcher, cutting the lead to just two runs.

However, Texas A&M-Kingsville answered with a three run bottom of the eighth to give them a better cushion heading into the ninth, where Joshua Valdez struck out two batters to end the game and earn the four out save.

Gaige Vines received the loss, going 4.1 innings while giving up two earned runs on six hits with three strikeouts and three walks. Skyler Henderson went 1.2 with two strikeouts, while Sean Maher pitched the final two innings, allowing three runs to score on three hits with three Ks as well.

Cameron ends the season with a 15-32 overall record while going 5-19 in Lone Star Conference play. The Javelinas are now 36-13 and 15-9 in league games.

Due to the conference's tiebreaker rule and the four straight losses to Texas A&M-Kingsville, the Aggies, who ended the season tied for sixth in the LSC standings with UT Permian Basin, did not make the league postseason tournament.

Since CU and UTPB split their series earlier this season, it came down to the secondary tiebreaker scenario, which is the teams' record against the top seeds in the conference. Both teams went 0-4 against West Texas A&M and Tarleton State, but the Falcons were able to take one against the Javelinas a few weeks ago, giving them last spot in the tournament.
