ODESSA, Texas -- The Aggie volleyball team matched their season high in total blocks with 13, but lost 3-1 to UT Permian Basin in their second Lone Star Conference match of the weekend on Saturday.
Cameron did a good job at the net once again, notching 13 blocks for the second straight match, while holding their opposition to just .201 attacking. They also had three service aces, but only recorded 43 kills and hit .126 on the attack, which played a big part in the loss.
Brandy Carr had a team-high 12 points for CU, recording seven kills and nine total blocks, while
Paige Dixon had 11 points with nine kills, two blocks and an ace. Sophomore setter
Katherine Manning notched another double-double, her seventh of the season, with 19 assists and 13 digs, as
Kirsten Evans and
Bailee Smith combined for 20 assists and 11 digs in the match. Senior
Brittnee Altic kept her double-digit dig streak in tact with 18 against UTPB, setting her streak with 10 or more digs at 15 now dating back to last season.
The Aggies struggle offensively to start the match, hitting just .044 in the first set and -.024 in the second. Set one was back and forth untill a late 3-0 run for the Falcons earned them the 25-19 win. In the second set, Cameron held an 18-12 lead after a 5-0 run, but the Falcons responded with an 8-1 run to take back the lead which they turned into a 25-22 set victory.
With their backs against the wall in set three, down 2-0 in the match and 24-19 in the set, CU used another 5-0 run to tie the match at 24. After trading points, the Black and Gold capitalized on a pair of UTPB errors to take the game 28-26 and set the match score at 2-1; the Aggies hit .312 in the third set. In the fourth, Cameron found themselves down by a large margin again, as UT Permian Basin built up a 20-11 lead. CU then scored six straight to get to within three, but the comeback would stop there as the home team took the set 25-21 and the match 3-1.
The Falcons were led by Travana Matthews with 17 kills and Skyler Friel with 16; Frield also had five blocks. Analise Lucio led the team with 25 assists, while Sarah Vasquez had a match-high 28 digs.
Cameron is now 2-12 overall and 0-4 in LSC matches, while UTPB moved to 8-4 on the season with a 3-1 league mark.
The Aggies will continue their road stretch next weekend as they visit Texas A&M-Commerce on Friday, Sep. 21 and Texas Woman's on Saturday, Sep. 22.
